Image credit: NASA \/ ESA \/ Hubble \/ Man-To Hui, Shanghai Astronomical Observatory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInterstellar objects provide unique opportunities for studying materials from other stellar systems,\u201d Harvard University\u2019s Professor Abraham Loeb and Dr. Mauro Barbieri of the INAF-Padova Observatory wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2515-5172\/ae3a77\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent paper<\/a> in the Research Notes of the American Astronomical Society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately for that purpose, 1I\/Oumuamua did not display traces of gas or dust around it and 2I\/Borisov was only observed at phase angles relative to the Sun-Earth axis of over 16 degrees and never near opposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On January 22, 2026, the interstellar object 3I\/ATLAS aligned to within an exceptionally small angle of 0.69 degrees with the Earth-Sun axis.<\/p>\n<p>During that moment, our planet passed almost directly between the Sun and the comet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis rare alignment resulted in a brightness surge whose magnitude and growth rate are dictated by the composition and structure of the particles shed by jets of 3I\/ATLAS,\u201d Professor Loeb explained in a <a href=\"https:\/\/avi-loeb.medium.com\/hubble-images-of-3i-atlas-during-its-rare-alignment-with-the-sun-earth-axis-on-january-22-2026-7ee2c20a70f0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sci.news\/images\/enlarge13\/image_14515_2e-3I-ATLAS.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108253\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-108253 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image_14515_2-3I-ATLAS.jpg\" alt=\"This image of the interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS was captured by Hubble\u2019s WFC3 instrument on January 22, 2026, at 13:40 UTC.
