{"id":549194,"date":"2026-01-28T12:51:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T12:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/549194\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T12:51:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T12:51:15","slug":"renewable-energy-deals-dry-up-in-alberta-as-nova-scotia-takes-the-lead-report-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/549194\/","title":{"rendered":"Renewable energy deals dry up in Alberta as Nova Scotia takes the lead, report says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/renewable-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/renewable-energy\/\">Renewable energy<\/a> deals in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/alberta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/alberta\/\">Alberta<\/a> have almost completely collapsed since the province overhauled rules that govern the sector, plummeting 99 per cent from 2023 to 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">While renewables activity in Alberta virtually disappeared in 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/nova-scotia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/nova-scotia\/\">Nova Scotia<\/a> emerged as Canada\u2019s most active market for corporate clean energy deals, according to a new report from Business Renewables Centre-Canada. It\u2019s the first time a province outside Alberta has led in corporate energy deals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Nova Scotia Power launched its Green Choice Program two years ago. It allows large-scale electricity customers to access renewable power from local developments. In January, 2025, the utility announced it had procured 262 megawatts of new wind capacity from projects under the program, all of which are co-owned by Mi\u2019kmaw communities in the province, the report said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">It added that Nova Scotia \u201cis a model for other corporate renewable energy procurement program development in provinces across Canada.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-alberta-restrictive-renewables-policies-dampened-investment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Report finds Alberta\u2019s restrictive renewables policies dampened investment<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Jorden Dye, the director of BRC-Canada, said he wasn\u2019t surprised about<b> <\/b>the dearth of activity in Alberta given the government\u2019s various policy decisions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Those include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-alberta-renewable-energy-pause-has-left-legacy-of-cancelled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-alberta-renewable-energy-pause-has-left-legacy-of-cancelled\/\">a seven-month moratorium on renewable project approvals<\/a>, banning projects from certain classes of agricultural lands and within 35 kilometres of protected areas such as provincial parks, a new upfront recycling fee for wind and solar equipment, and new reclamation security requirements for developers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe went from an average of about 1,000 megawatts of deals per year down to only five megawatts last year. That\u2019s hundreds of millions of dollars every year and thousands of construction jobs,\u201d Mr. Dye said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Corporate backing for renewables has dried up as a result of policy changes, Mr. Dye said, which has also hurt<b> <\/b>the pipeline for future projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The office of Alberta\u2019s Utilities Minister said in a statement that the BRC-Canada report is a \u201cmisleading characterization\u201d of Alberta\u2019s renewables sector. Alberta has led Canada in new renewable energy development over the past few years, the statement said, adding that the province\u2019s utilities commission approved 16 renewable projects in 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/editorials\/article-renewable-energy-alberta-oil-gas-danielle-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Editorial: Free the market for renewable energy in Alberta<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Solar and wind projects in the province generated roughly $70.6-million in municipal tax revenues in 2025, according to the report. But those \u201cbenefits are being overshadowed and even put at risk by new policies that continue to weigh on Alberta\u2019s renewable energy market,\u201d it<b> <\/b>said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThere remains substantial evidence that private-sector buyers want more low-cost, non-emitting energy, and the fundamentals of Alberta\u2019s market-based electricity system continue to make it an appealing host jurisdiction.
