{"id":550058,"date":"2026-01-28T21:38:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T21:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/550058\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T21:38:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T21:38:11","slug":"another-strike-sends-31000-kaiser-permanente-health-care-workers-to-picket-lines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/550058\/","title":{"rendered":"Another strike sends 31,000 Kaiser Permanente health care workers to picket lines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">OAKLAND, Calif. &#8212; An estimated 31,000 registered nurses and other front-line Kaiser Permanente health care workers launched an open-ended strike this week in California and Hawaii to demand better wages and staffing from the health care giant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The picketing that began Monday marked the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kaiser-permanente-nurses-strike-5697381171318cb15da645cebbebacf4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second major walkout<\/a> in recent months by employees represented by the United Nurses Associations of California\/Union of Health Care Professionals. A five-day strike in October ended with negotiations resuming, but talks broke down in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">This week the union accused Kaiser of refusing to return to national bargaining discussions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cWe will continue to push Kaiser to stop their egregious unfair labor practices against the frontline workers who deliver the best care for their patients and billions in profit to do the right thing, and come back to the table to bargain in good faith,\u201d the union bargaining committee said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Kaiser said Sunday that the union had agreed to return to local bargaining, even as workers moved forward with the strike. The company said it paused national bargaining last month after what it described as a threatening incident involving a union official.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIllegal threats are a line that cannot be crossed,\u201d Greg Holmes, Kaiser\u2019s chief human resources officer, said in a statement. \u201cThis union official\u2019s actions have compromised the national bargaining process and undermined both parties\u2019 ability to continue good-faith bargaining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Those on strike, including pharmacists, midwives and rehab therapists, say wages have not kept pace with inflation and there is not enough staffing to keep up with patient demand. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">They are asking for a 25% wage increase over four years to make up for wages they say are at least 7% behind their peers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Kaiser Permanente had countered with a 21.5% increase over four years. The company says that represented employees earn, on average, 16% more than their peers, and it would have to charge customers more to meet strikers&#8217; pay demand. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Arezou Mansourian, a physician assistant on the bargaining team, told the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/health\/article\/kaiser-workers-strike-21312742.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a> that Kaiser has been unable to retain and recruit providers, which is impacting patient care. Medical staff have been leaving Kaiser for higher-paying jobs at other local hospitals, Mansourian said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">She said the union\u2019s fight for better working conditions will ultimately help patients as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cWe know it\u2019s a pain right now, but it\u2019s so that we can take care of you better in the future,\u201d Mansourian told the Chronicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The company said health clinics and hospitals will remain open during the strike, with some in-person appointments shifted to virtual appointments, and some elective surgeries and procedures being rescheduled. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Kaiser Permanente is one of the nation\u2019s largest not-for-profit health plans, serving 12.6 million members at 600 medical offices and 40 hospitals in largely western U.S. states. It is based in Oakland, California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In New York City, about 15,000 <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nursing-strike-new-york-52eb188fba403c800c76a46166e1fab9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nurses who walked off the job<\/a> headed <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nursing-strike-nyc-50ef510a29c82310cae7f068294acbf1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">back to the bargaining table<\/a> earlier this month.
