Traders also mulled over the release of earnings reports from major tech firms and the latest Federal Reserve rate decision. <\/p>\n<p>Futures linked to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@SP.1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">broad market index<\/a> dropped 0.2%. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@DJ.1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dow Jones Industrial Average futures<\/a> tumbled 145 points, or 0.3%. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@ND.1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nasdaq 100 futures<\/a> were near the flatline.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/XAU=\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spot gold<\/a> surpassed the $5,500 mark in overnight trading, and it was last up nearly 2%. The yellow metal, long viewed as a safety asset, has been surging to new records as the U.S. dollar continues to slide.<\/p>\n<p>In extended trading, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/META\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta Platforms<\/a> added 7% after the Facebook parent gave a stronger-than-expected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/28\/meta-q4-earnings-report-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first-quarter sales forecast<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/MSFT\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft<\/a> shares fell 6% as cloud growth slowed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/28\/microsoft-msft-q2-earnings-report-2026.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiscal second quarter<\/a> and the company gave soft guidance on operating margin in the fiscal third quarter. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/TSLA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tesla<\/a> shares advanced 1% after the company&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/28\/tesla-tsla-2025-q4-earnings.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fourth-quarter results<\/a> beat expectations.<\/p>\n<p>In Wednesday&#8217;s regular session, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.SPX\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S&amp;P 500<\/a> briefly topped the 7,000 threshold, but ultimately ended the day little changed after the Fed kept its benchmark interest rate at a range of 3.5% to 3.75%. The 30-stock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.DJI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dow<\/a> added just 12 points.
