There was Ernie, who barked from his crate, and Cristina, who snuggled with her five puppies. Nearby, siblings Penny, Malcolm, Francis and Mason, four orange kittens, rolled around with one another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Some 115 animals from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/weather\/2025\/07\/09\/drier-conditions-expected-for-kerr-county-as-search-effort-continues-for-flood-victims\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/weather\/2025\/07\/09\/drier-conditions-expected-for-kerr-county-as-search-effort-continues-for-flood-victims\/\">Texas\u2019 flood-ravaged Hill Country<\/a> landed Thursday at a private tarmac in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/fort-worth\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/fort-worth\/\">Fort Worth<\/a>, flown by the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/wingsofrescue.org\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=21983187278&amp;gbraid=0AAAAA-j8rVN7erWoZY8KS2PKj0Ltpy44f&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwyb3DBhBlEiwAqZLe5C-fh97LQT5zMj1XY_sc3ktkVDzfujaJkA_HbLZ5L3Y-OB1_P-f9xRoCMaIQAvD_BwE\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/wingsofrescue.org\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=21983187278&amp;gbraid=0AAAAA-j8rVN7erWoZY8KS2PKj0Ltpy44f&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwyb3DBhBlEiwAqZLe5C-fh97LQT5zMj1XY_sc3ktkVDzfujaJkA_HbLZ5L3Y-OB1_P-f9xRoCMaIQAvD_BwE\">Wings of Rescue<\/a>. The relocation keeps animals from being euthanized and allows newly lost pets to stay near home if family members are searching for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Similar relocations happened earlier this year after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/01\/19\/176-animals-flown-to-north-texas-from-los-angeles-to-make-room-for-wildfire-victims-pets\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/01\/19\/176-animals-flown-to-north-texas-from-los-angeles-to-make-room-for-wildfire-victims-pets\/\">wildfires in Los Angeles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s gut-wrenching to think about,\u201d said Cassie Davidson, a senior director for the Humane Society who also works for Wings of Rescue. \u201cIt\u2019s literally fly or die for these animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">A couple dozen volunteers helped unload crate after crate, handing out chicken and turkey treats from Cuddly, a crowdfunding site dedicated to animal welfare. Reaching through slats of the crates, they pet cats and let dogs lick their hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Tiffany Mindt-Wood and her 18-year-old son, Jacob of Keller, helped carry crates off the plane and onto trucks headed to shelters. The family provides foster care to animals through the Humane Society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWhen something horrible like this happens, we\u2019re gutted, but no one knows how to help,\u201d Mindt-Wood said. \u201cThis is a small way to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:4096 \/ 2730\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"4096\" height=\"2730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/PBNLTK7NNJEVZNC4Z273O5UK5U.jpg\" alt=\"Volunteers and staff from local animal shelters unload dogs and cats from a Wings of Rescue...\"\/>Volunteers and staff from local animal shelters unload dogs and cats from a Wings of Rescue flight at Meacham International Airport, Thursday, July 10, 2025, in Fort Worth. 115 cats and dogs from San Marcos and San Angelo shelters arrived in North Texas to help make space for animals rescued from the floods in the Texas Hill Country.(El\u00edas Valverde II \/ Staff Photographer)<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Texas is already one of the top states in the country for shelter volumes and euthanasia, in part because milder winters allow for year-round breeding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">North Texas shelters, many of which were full when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/weather\/2025\/07\/04\/texas-flash-flood-alley-is-one-of-the-most-flood-prone-areas-in-north-america\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/weather\/2025\/07\/04\/texas-flash-flood-alley-is-one-of-the-most-flood-prone-areas-in-north-america\/\">Guadalupe River flooded<\/a>, sent some animals to shelters around the country to free up space. Such relocations are common after floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters, said Sarah Sheek, senior director of live-saving operations for the SPCA. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Wings of Rescue alone has flown more than 2 million miles and rescued more than 80,000 pets since it began in 2012. The flights are expensive, starting at about $25,000, and fully supported by donors. Some will go into emergency foster care.
