{"id":551174,"date":"2026-01-29T08:43:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T08:43:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/551174\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T08:43:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T08:43:15","slug":"car-rams-into-chabad-headquarters-in-new-york-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/551174\/","title":{"rendered":"Car rams into Chabad headquarters in New York City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A man was arrested after repeatedly crashing his car into the Chabad Lubavitch world headquarters in New York City on Wednesday night while people were gathered for prayer at the deeply revered Hasidic Jewish site.<\/p>\n<p>No one was injured when the driver struck a door of a building in the complex before reversing and striking it several more times. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that while it was too early in the investigation to speculate on the driver\u2019s motives, the incident was being investigated as a possible hate crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is deeply alarming, especially given the deep meaning and the history of the institution to so many in New York and around the world,\u201d said New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who called the crash \u201cintentional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Video of the crash that was posted online shows a car with New Jersey license plates moving forward and backward on an icy driveway leading to a building in the complex and ramming its basement-level doors.<\/p>\n<p>The driver, who is wearing shorts, emerges, shouts to bystanders that \u201cIt slipped\u201d and says something to police about trying to park.<\/p>\n<p>Chabad Lubavitch spokesperson Motti Seligson said some of the doors were damaged in the crash.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"more-section-display-name\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"New York Mayor-elect Mamdani says the city\u2019s current police commissioner will stay on the job\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-york-mayor-mamdani-police-commissioner-tisch-0251ebaf69c3d03aed5999bba7cafdb9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch walk to the New York City Police Memorial, Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025. Its Gothic Revival facade is very recognizable to adherents of the Chabad movement and has inspired dozens of replicas across the world.<\/p>\n<p>Commonly referred to as 770, a nod to the Eastern Parkway address of the complex\u2019s original building, the headquarters encompasses multiple adjacent structures.<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez called the crash \u201cdisturbing and unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis could have been much worse and I\u2019m grateful that no one was hurt,\u201d he said in a post on social platform X. \u201cMy office is working closely with the NYPD to ensure justice is done and the community is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither bombs nor any other weapons were found in the car that hit the building, according to Tisch. She said it was also too early in the investigation to comment on the driver\u2019s mental state.<\/p>\n<p>The incident happened on the 75th anniversary of the date that <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/rabbi-chabad-lubavitch-new-york-synagogue-67e2cf3e81165b4b8491ef67fb72b21f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson<\/a> became the leader of the Lubavitch movement. Schneerson died in 1994 but remains a revered figure globally.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a near constant police presence around 770 Eastern Parkway for years.<\/p>\n<p>The site was at the epicenter of the Crown Heights riots in 1991, when Black residents of the neighborhood attacked Jews after a child was killed by a car traveling in Schneerson\u2019s motorcade.
