Many people view San Diego as the ultimate vacation destination<\/a>. But as residents, we need our own getaways, too. Thankfully, living in San Diego means that we\u2019re never too far from our next adventure. With costs across the country on the rise, however, we put together a list of nearby destinations that are less than four hours from San Diego and attractions that won\u2019t break the bank<\/a> once there. In fact, all activities are $30 or less, so now you really have no reason to escape the city this year. Here\u2019s our list of budget-friendly travel destinations near San Diego:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Los Angeles\u00a0<\/p>\n

Less than two hours north of San Diego (traffic permitting, of course) sits the entertainment capital of the world: Los Angeles. In a city that\u2019s bustling with unique and memorable experiences<\/a>, it\u2019s actually a great getaway that doesn\u2019t have to drain your bank account.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A must-do on the budget-friendly LA itinerary is Griffith Park<\/a>. With over 4,000 expansive acres, Griffith Park is chock-full of hiking trails and picnic spots. One of the park\u2019s hotspots is Griffith Observatory<\/a>, an iconic landmark that is free to visit. Close by is Runyon Canyon, a popular hiking destination that is frequented by celebrities and known for its views of the Hollywood sign. LA is also home to a range of museums that offer free admission, including The Broad<\/a>, the Institute of Contemporary Art<\/a>, and the California African American Museum<\/a>. <\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for a more one-of-a-kind experience, consider checking out the swan pedal boats<\/a> in Echo Park that cost $13 per hour. Then, just outside of LA is the well-known Huntington Library and Botanic Garden<\/a> that features a vast library, art museum, and 16 themed gardens. Adult tickets cost $29, while children four and under can visit for free.<\/p>\n

Santa Monica<\/p>\n

Just west of LA is Santa Monica, another easily accessible city that evokes images of sunshine, beach days, and a laid-back attitude. This makes it a great place to spend time if you\u2019re looking for money-saving activities.<\/p>\n

One of the city\u2019s most visited landmarks is Santa Monica State Beach<\/a>. With over three miles of sandy space, beachgoers can enjoy an inexpensive day lounging in the sun or playing in the water. The iconic Santa Monica Pier<\/a> also offers plenty of affordable fun, from amusement park rides and arcade games to good old-fashioned people watching. Want to take in more picturesque views? Make the short drive over to the Venice Canals<\/a> and enjoy a serene walk along the historic waterways.<\/p>\n

Catalina Island<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for an island getaway, then Catalina Island<\/a> might be the answer you\u2019re looking for. It is one of California\u2019s Channel Islands and offers a welcome blend of adventure and relaxation.<\/p>\n

While a one-way ferry ticket does cost more than $30, once you\u2019re on the island, there are plenty of free and reasonably-priced activities. Whether you bring your own gear or rent it, Catalina Island offers great opportunities to snorkel and spend time in the water, or simply just sunbathe on one of the many beaches. For ticketed options, visit Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden<\/a> that features plants that naturally grow on one or more of the Channel Islands and nowhere else in the world. Adult admission costs $14, with discounts available for seniors, children, students, and veterans. Then, take the family to Mini Golf Gardens<\/a> where adult tickets are priced at $15 and a child\u2019s ticket costs $12. If museum culture is more your vibe, check out the Catalina Museum for Art & History<\/a>. Tickets are priced at $12 for adults, while admission for children 15 years and younger is free with a paid adult ticket.<\/p>\n

Julian<\/p>\n

Nestled in the Cuyamaca Mountains<\/a> is Julian, a charming town that\u2019s overflowing with personality. Located just over an hour east of San Diego, it\u2019s an accessible and peaceful destination away from the hustle-and-bustle of the city.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

One of the things Julian is known for most is pie. A slice from Mom\u2019s Pie House<\/a> costs less than $8, while a majority of the full pies from Julian Pie Company<\/a> are under $30. For some good family fun, head to Julian Farm and Orchard<\/a> where, no matter the time of year, you can enjoy budget-friendly activities. Seasonal offerings include daffodils in early spring, berries in the summer, apples in late summer, and pumpkins in the fall, with farm pricing at $5 for general admission and add-ons available. For a truly distinctive experience, look into Eagle Mining Co.<\/a>, with tours priced at $15 for adults and $8 for children aged 5 to 11. If you\u2019re still looking for more plans to fill your day, wander down Julian\u2019s idyllic main street or drive out to nearby Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Borrego Springs<\/p>\n

Less than two hours east of San Diego, Borrego Springs<\/a> offers one-of-a-kind experiences. Whether you want to stargaze<\/a>, hike, or take in unusual artwork, this special town is a great place to explore.<\/p>\n

One of the most notable attractions in Borrego Springs are the Sky Art Sculptures<\/a>. These roadside wonders that range from a giant tortoise and dinosaurs to a serpent that stretches across the street simply require you to drive around, not pay a fee. You can also throw on your hiking boots and explore the desert trails of Anza-Borrego State Park<\/a>, the largest state park in California. Another activity, the Borrego Art Institute<\/a>, is a center for local art that includes an indoor gallery and outdoor ArtPark.<\/p>\n

Laguna Beach<\/p>\n

For a true Californian holiday, visit the little coastal town of Laguna Beach<\/a>. An hour north of San Diego, this community features ample free and affordable opportunities.<\/p>\n

With over 30 beaches, Laguna Beach is an ideal place if you\u2019re looking to get a little sand between your toes or surf some waves<\/a>. And if you want to take in some breathtaking views, walk along the oceanfront trail at Heisler Park<\/a> or trek up the Top of the World hike. You can also explore the town by way of a free open air trolley<\/a> or a walkable self-guided public art tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Joshua Tree<\/p>\n

For an outdoorsy getaway that won\u2019t hurt your wallet, Joshua Tree National Park<\/a> is a must. Roughly three hours northeast of San Diego, this desert oasis is perfect for a day trip or weekend camping trip.<\/p>\n

Joshua Tree National Park offers 300 miles of hiking trails<\/a>, roughly 2,000 bouldering areas, and plenty of roads to explore via car or bike. This makes it an ideal travel destination for national park lovers looking to fill their itinerary with cost-effective activities. And just outside this popular park is Pioneertown<\/a>, a Western-themed community that served as the backdrop for many movies, TV shows, and music videos. Nowadays, visitors can wander down Mane Street, grab a bite from a local eatery, and enjoy some live music.<\/p>\n

San Juan Capistrano<\/p>\n

Rich in history is San Juan Capistrano<\/a>, which is accessible via car and even the Pacific Surfliner. This city sits just south of Laguna Beach.<\/p>\n

One of the town\u2019s biggest draws is Mission San Juan Capistrano<\/a>, a historical landmark and museum. Founded over 200 years ago, the Mission offers admission of $18 for adults, with discounts available for seniors, children, and students. San Juan Capistrano\u2019s Los Rios Historic District is known as one of California\u2019s oldest neighborhoods and consists of quaint shops and character. Another highlight in the city is Putuidem Village, a cultural park that honors Orange County\u2019s indigenous history and doesn\u2019t require paid entry. Also, if you\u2019re lucky enough to visit San Juan Capistrano in early spring, consider checking out the annual Swallows Day Parade<\/a> that celebrates cliff swallows returning to the Mission after a winter away.<\/p>\n

Palm Springs<\/p>\n

If you\u2019d rather experience a desert escape, Palm Springs<\/a> may be the answer for you! Located three hours or less away from San Diego (again, traffic permitting), it is a popular destination for those looking to get out of town.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of activities that are great for a family vacation, couple\u2019s weekend, or solo outing, like Moorten Botanical Garden<\/a> ($7 or less for admission) and Rock the Park<\/a> outdoor concerts (no cost!). This hotspot is also home to fun and interesting museums, including the Palm Springs Art Museum<\/a> and Palm Springs Air Museum. Adult tickets at the artistic institution cost $20, while children 17 years and under can visit for free. At the Palm Springs Air Museum<\/a>, tickets are priced at $24 and children 12 years and under can experience it for free with paid adult admission.<\/p>\n

Another outdoorsy destination that doesn\u2019t have to break the bank is Idyllwild<\/a>. It\u2019s an ideal place to go if you\u2019re looking for a romantic weekend or a chance to reconnect with nature.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This mountain town features plenty of hiking opportunities, including nearby San Jacinto Peak<\/a>. If challenging hikes are not on your schedule, try visiting the Idyllwild Nature Center<\/a>. It includes a museum, picnic areas, and guided tour opportunities. You can also explore some of Idyllwild\u2019s cute and eclectic shops, and maybe even catch a glimpse of the town\u2019s dog mayor<\/a>!<\/p>\n
