{"id":551711,"date":"2026-01-29T14:11:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T14:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/551711\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T14:11:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T14:11:10","slug":"today-in-white-sox-history-january-29","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/551711\/","title":{"rendered":"Today in White Sox History: January 29"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>1900<\/strong> <br \/><strong>Charles Comiskey <\/strong>received permission to relocate the Western League\u2019s St. Paul Saints to Chicago, where they will become the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southsidesox.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:White Sox;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">White Sox<\/a> of the American League.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>1957 <\/strong><br \/>With air travel commonplace and MLB now stretching from coast to coast, the league considered drafting a plan to create a player pool to be used in the case of a plane crash. For whatever reason (likely that in the case of such a disaster a franchise would have to fold its current season and receive help from other clubs with an offseason draft) a plan never was put forth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1964<\/strong> <br \/><strong>Jim Brosnan <\/strong>is given permission from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southsidesox.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:White Sox;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">White Sox<\/a> to seek a deal with another team, after GM <strong>Ed Short <\/strong>forbids any further in-season writing (Brosnan previously had authored the classic book, The Long Season, as well as Pennant Race). Brosnan, who was acquired during the 1963 season and threw extremely well out of the pen (2.84 ERA, 15 saves and 1.1 WAR) for the pennant-chasing White Sox, would be released by the team on February 25.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Brosnan never pitched another game in the majors, his career over at age 34.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1981<\/strong> <br \/><strong>Jerry Reinsdorf<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0Eddie Einhorn<\/strong>\u00a0gained control of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southsidesox.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Chicago White Sox;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Chicago White Sox<\/a> for $20 million, after American League owners turned down\u00a0<strong>Bill Veeck<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0attempt to sell to Eddie DeBartolo.<\/p>\n<p>For franchise value context, on the same day the owners approved an 80% sale of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lookoutlanding.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Seattle Mariners;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Seattle Mariners<\/a> for $10.4 million.<\/p>\n<p>Reinsdorf\u2019s\u00a0original partner was William Farley, but Farley dropped out in part because the White Sox went out and signed free agents\u00a0<strong>Ron LeFlore\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Jim Essian<\/strong>. Farley didn\u2019t approve of the team spending $3 million for them \u2014 even though\u00a0Veeck\u00a0got the money for the signings from DeBartolo.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Reinsdorf\u00a0originally was part of a group trying to buy the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazinavenue.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:New York Mets;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">New York Mets<\/a>.\u00a0Einhorn\u00a0originally was part of a group trying to get the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaslampball.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:San Diego Padres;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">San Diego Padres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1998<\/strong> <br \/>The end of <strong>Ozzie Guill\u00e9n<\/strong>\u2019s White Sox career became official, as the 34-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Baltimore. Ozzie\u2019s first year away from the White Sox since 1985 proved eventful, as the O\u2019s released him a month into the season. But Guill\u00e9n would catch on quickly with Atlanta and would see action in both the 1998 and 1999 postseasons with the Braves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2002<\/strong> <br \/>In the moment, it was a strange trade by GM <strong>Ken Williams<\/strong>, as the White Sox traded stalwart outfielder <strong>Chris Singleton <\/strong>to Baltimore for young utilityman <strong>Willie Harris<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Singleton had an extraordinary rookie season in 1999 (4.8 WAR and 20-of-25 steals playing a superb center field, somehow garnering just sixth place in AL Rookie of the Year voting) and had bounced back nicely with a 2.2-WAR 2001 after a tough sophomore season. Harris, younger by five years, never came close to reaching even those heights in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>However, Harris will always have a special place in the hearts of White Sox fans, scoring the winning (and only) run of the 2005 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/world-series\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:World Series;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">World Series<\/a> Game 4 clincher. Harris lead off the eighth inning of a scoreless tie with a single to left, then was grinded over to third by a <strong>Scott Podsednik <\/strong>sacrifice bunt and <strong>Carl Everett <\/strong>ground out and driving in by <strong>Jermaine Dye<\/strong>\u2019s dribble single to center field. Harris was 2-for-2 in the 2005 playoffs, the only postseason of his career.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2013<\/strong> <br \/>A damning story in the Miami New Times listed the names of several major leaguers who were customers of a PED clinic in Coral Gables, Fla., Biogenesis Laboratories. \u00c1lex Rodr\u00edguez is the headliner of shame, but three past or future White Sox are also named: <strong>Bartolo Col\u00f3n<\/strong>, <strong>Melky Cabrera <\/strong>and <strong>Yasmani Grandal<\/strong>.
