After A\u2019zion\u2019s casting was announced earlier this week, fans of the book noted that the character of Zoe Gutierrez, which A\u2019zion was set to portray, was of Mexican heritage and Jewish. A\u2019zion is not Mexican, which fans online argued was an irreconcilable difference.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tPosting on her Instagram stories, A\u2019zion said she agreed with the criticism and had not been fully aware of the character\u2019s identity before accepting the role.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cGuys!! I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie,\u201d A\u2019zion posted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThank you guys for bringing this to my attention. I AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU! This is why I love you guys. I\u2019m so sorry that this happened. It is SO important for me to let you in on how it all went down: I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I\u2019m so pissed y\u2019all, I hadn\u2019t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting\u2026and now that I know what I know???\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tA\u2019zion added: \u201cFuck that. I\u2019m out! I\u2019d never take a role from someone else that\u2019s meant to do it. That SHOULD do it! That\u2019s not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am not one of them. I can\u2019t wait to see who it ends up being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSet in the 2000s, Deep Cuts is a love story about two music-obsessed twentysomethings navigating the messy realities of ambition, belonging, and adulthood over the course of an era-defining decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tCivil War star Cailee Spaeny and Queer star Drew Starkey lead the film. The adaptation was initially set up with<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/02\/saoirse-ronan-austin-butler-deep-cuts-a24-sean-durkin-1236303345\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler<\/a>, but following scheduling conflicts, both stars dropped out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tEli Bush, Ronald Bronstein, and Josh Safdie are producing alongside Durkin, Anthony Katagas, Jordan Tappis, and A24.
