{"id":552330,"date":"2026-01-29T20:22:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T20:22:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/552330\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T20:22:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T20:22:18","slug":"dangerous-cold-in-nyc-but-minimal-snow-as-bombogenesis-approaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/552330\/","title":{"rendered":"Dangerous cold in NYC but minimal snow as &#8216;bombogenesis&#8217; approaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"px66y\">Dangerously cold weather will continue with temperatures that could feel close to or below zero this weekend, just days after <a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/among-10-who-died-outside-in-nyc-cold-a-history-of-homelessness-drug-use-health-issues\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at least 10 people were found dead outside<\/a> following this past Sunday\u2019s major storm.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"degbt\">A \u201cbombogenesis\u201d or \u201cbomb cyclone\u201d may bring a few inches of snow to the New York City area, but the National Weather Service says the chances of snowfall are trending downward as a rapidly intensifying low pressure system edges closer to the region.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"1gvnm\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen increasing trends in our model guidance that the storm is likely to pass just far enough offshore to mitigate the worst of the impacts of the New York City area,\u201d said Dominic Ramunni, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service\u2019s New York office. \u201cIn fact, it might be a dry day as the storm passes by, perhaps just a little bit of a wind or a few flurries or light snow showers around, especially on the day during the day on Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"9pqqt\">Daytime air temperature will likely remain in the teens and lower 20s through Sunday. Temperatures will be particularly brutal in the early morning. So New Yorkers should stay bundled up, Ramunni said.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"6b85g\">\u201cIt&#8217;s actually quite dangerous and as we&#8217;ve seen, unfortunately, folks who are out there and the elements exposed, have already lost their lives,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s why we&#8217;re always encouraging folks to dress in layers, limit your time outdoors, cover that exposed skin, the fingers, the neck, the ears, those are the first to really feel it if you&#8217;re out there for more than a few minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"3ht75\">Ramunni said the New York City area hasn\u2019t experienced a stretch of below-freezing temperatures this long in around eight years \u2014 a stark change from recent winters, which were \u201clackluster\u201d in terms of snow and cold.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"ffbdb\">\u201cWe really don&#8217;t get these cold snaps that often, even in the dead of winter, which is what we&#8217;re in right now \u2014 we&#8217;re talking about high temperatures 15 to 20 degrees below normal for seven consecutive days,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That\u2019s rather impressive in the meteorology field.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"1pmq9\">Thursday night&#8217;s temperatures will get down to lows around 11 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
