Teen comedy &#8216;Clueless&#8217; one of 25 movies entering film registry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As if they\u2019d leave \u201cClueless\u201d off the list. <\/p>\n<p>Cher Horowitz fans, rejoice: <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/as-if-its-a-clueless-comeback-48ac6d6a418d4eb0bdd8d4159ea70e37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amy Heckerling\u2019s 1995 teen comedy<\/a> is one of 25 classic movies chosen this year by the Library of Congress for its National Film Registry.<\/p>\n<p>And if \u201cClueless\u201d wasn\u2019t your jam \u2014 whatever! \u2014 maybe this will send you deep into your dreams: <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/christopher-nolan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christopher Nolan\u2019s<\/a> mind-bending \u201cInception\u201d is in the mix. Other films chosen for preservation include \u201cThe Karate Kid,\u201d \u201cGlory,\u201d \u201cPhiladelphia,\u201d \u201cBefore Sunrise,\u201d \u201cThe Incredibles\u201d and \u201cFrida.\u201d There are four documentaries, including \u201cBrooklyn Bridge\u201d by Ken Burns. From old Hollywood, there\u2019s the 1954 musical \u201cWhite Christmas,\u201d and the 1956 \u201cHigh Society,\u201d Grace Kelly\u2019s last movie before marrying into royalty. <\/p>\n<p>Since 1988, the Library of Congress has selected 25 movies each year for preservation due to their \u201ccultural, historic or aesthetic importance.\u201d The films must be at least 10 years old. <\/p>\n<p>The oldest of the 2025 picks dates from 1896, filmmaker William Selig\u2019s \u201cThe Tramp and the Dog.\u201d The newest of the group is from 2014: Wes Anderson\u2019s \u201cThe Grand Budapest Hotel,\u201d which, the registry noted, involved \u201cmeticulous historical research at the Library of Congress to create visually striking scenery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turner Classic Movies will host a TV special March 19 to screen a selection of the films. <\/p>\n<p>A closer look at some of this year\u2019s selections:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Tramp and the Dog\u201d (1896): Once deemed lost, but discovered in 2021 at the National Library of Norway, Selig\u2019s silent film tells the story of a tramp who tries to steal a pie from a backyard windowsill \u2014 and is foiled by a dog. The registry notes it\u2019s an early example of \u201cpants humor\u201d \u2014 \u201cwhere a character loses (or almost loses) its pants during an altercation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Maid of McMillan\u201d (1916): This 15-minute silent film, a \u201cwhimsical silent romance\u201d shot by students at a drama club at Washington University in St. Louis, tells the story of the track team captain, Jack, who\u2019s in love with Myrtle, \u201ca pretty coed,\u201d according to the university\u2019s library. It is known, the registry says, as the first student film on record. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTen Nights in a Barroom\u201d (1926): A silent film featuring an all-Black cast, it\u2019s based on a stage melodrama adapted from \u201cTen Nights in a Bar-room and What I Saw There,\u201d an 1854 \u201ctemperance novel\u201d written to discourage readers from drinking alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh Society\u201d (1956): In what the registry calls \u201cthe last great musical of the Golden Age of Hollywood,\u201d Bing Crosby appeared with Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly, in her last movie before retiring and marrying Prince Rainier of Monaco. Louis Armstrong appeared with his band. Kelly wore her Cartier engagement ring during filming, the registry notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrooklyn Bridge\u201d (1981): <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/ken-burns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ken Burns\u2019<\/a> first documentary broadcast on PBS, in which the filmmaker recounted the building of the iconic landmark. \u201cMore than just a filmmaker, Burns has become a trusted public historian,\u201d the registry says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Big Chill\u201d (1983): Lawrence Kasdan\u2019s era-defining story of a group of friends reuniting after a suicide features Glenn Close, William Hurt, JoBeth Williams, Kevin Kline, Jeff Goldblum and Meg Tilly in an ensemble that \u201cportrays American stereotypes of the time \u2014 the yuppie, the drug dealer, the TV star \u2014 and deftly humanizes them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Karate Kid (1984): <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/ralph-macchio-says-diversity-deepens-the-legacy-of-the-karate-kid-franchise-568fbe396cbf48b3bdcfb7e67f285ad3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The first film in the franchise, starring Ralph Macchio<\/a> and Pat Morita, is \u201cas American as they come,\u201d the registry says \u2014 \u201ca hero\u2019s journey, a sports movie and a teen movie \u2014 a feel-good movie, but not without grit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGlory\u201d (1989): <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/denzel-washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denzel Washington<\/a> won an Oscar as Private Trip in this story of the 54th Regiment, a unit of Black soldiers who fought in the Civil War. The cast also included Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes and Andre Braugher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhiladelphia\u201d (1993): <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/tom-hanks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom Hanks<\/a> starred \u2014 and won an Oscar \u2014 in one of the first big studio movies to confront the HIV\/AIDS crisis. The film is also known for Bruce Springsteen\u2019s Oscar-winning song, \u201cThe Streets of Philadelphia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Sunrise\u201d (1995): The first film of Richard Linklater\u2019s deeply romantic \u201cBefore\u201d trilogy, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. The registry notes Linklater\u2019s \u201cinnovative use of time as a defining and recurring cinematic tool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClueless\u201d (1995): Heckerling\u2019s teen comedy, starring Alicia Silverstone, was a loose adaptation of Jane Austen\u2019s \u201cEmma\u201d and forever enshrined the phrase \u201cAs if!\u201d into popular culture.
