Josh Shapiro backed the City of Philadelphia\u2019s lawsuit challenging the dismantling of slavery exhibits in Independence National Historical Park earlier this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro filed an amicus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/content\/dam\/copapwp-pagov\/en\/governor\/documents\/01.27.26%20PHL%20Presidents%20House%20Site%20Exhibit%20final%20amicus%20brief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brief<\/a> on Tuesday in support of the lawsuit filed against the Trump administration. The National Park Service is currently holding the slavery exhibits \u2014 which were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/article\/2026\/01\/penn-independence-park-slavery-exhibit-torn-down-trump-philadelphia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dismantled<\/a> last week \u2014 in the National Constitution Center.<\/p>\n<p>In the Jan. 27 brief, Shapiro accused the Trump administration of \u201cwhitewashing history,\u201d and denying \u201cPennsylvanians and others the opportunity to learn more about a part of our history that cannot be ignored.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro also emphasized the need to strike a balance between federal and local authorities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the importance of federalism, the current federal administration has sought to trample over the constitutional role of states and by extension local governments,\u201d Shapiro wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration did not destroy the plaques after removing them from the President\u2019s House in Independence Park last week. Rather, the dismantled exhibits will remain within the National Constitution Center until the matter is settled in court.<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker \u2014 who graduated from the Fels Institute of Government in 2016 \u2014 \u00a0brought the lawsuit against the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior on Jan. 22. In its complaint, the city argued that the National Park Service violated federal law and breached a 2006 agreement with the City by dismantling the exhibit \u201cwithout notice.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the initial lawsuit, a spokesperson for the Interior Department wrote that the department encouraged Philadelphia \u201cto focus on getting their jobless rates down and ending their reckless cashless bail policy\u201d rather than \u201cfiling frivolous lawsuits in the hopes of demeaning our brave Founding Fathers who set the brilliant road map for the greatest country in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The removal of the exhibit \u2014 which includes displays at a memorial honoring the nine people enslaved by George Washington \u2014 came after 1968 Wharton graduate and President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to review national sites and remove displays that \u201cinappropriately disparage Americans past or living\u201d in March 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In July 2025, the Trump administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedp.com\/article\/2025\/08\/penn-independence-park-trump-executive-order-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review<\/a> flagged more than a dozen displays about slavery.
