With the city-run NYC Ferry still shut down because of heavy ice in the East River, the Hudson, and New York Harbor, Gray headed to the Midtown terminal to see what was still moving.

An NY Waterway ferry follows a tugboat into the Midtown terminal. From Hell’s Kitchen, the Hudson looked almost set in place — a pale, cracked field stretching toward New Jersey. Out on the water, it became a surreal winter tableau: loose sheets of ice bumping and turning in the current, the skyline sharp beyond it, like the city dropped into a snow globe.

Success!
