{"id":55633,"date":"2025-07-11T01:58:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T01:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/55633\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T01:58:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T01:58:12","slug":"paperback-exchange-is-writing-its-next-chapter-in-minneapolis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/55633\/","title":{"rendered":"Paperback Exchange is writing its next chapter in Minneapolis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Paperback Exchange is one of more than 100 vendors that will be at the Book Fair for Grown-Ups at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds on July 12. <\/p>\n<p>MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota \u2014 After a water main break in southwest Minneapolis forced multiple businesses to temporarily shut down in February, at least two are now closing for good.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sparrow Cafe announced last month it would not be reopening, while Terzo is also now permanently closed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One business still hoping to return to the community is Paperback Exchange.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The beloved bookstore first opened near the corner of 50th &amp; Penn Avenue South in 1975.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was started by a small group of local teachers and women who just wanted to own a bookstore. About in &#8217;91, the Herseys \u2014 the family who owns it now \u2014 decided to buy it when the women were done managing it. They&#8217;ve had it ever since,&#8221; explained Rachel Pedersen, the store&#8217;s manager.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Paperback Exchange spent its 50th anniversary closed to the public.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>February 13, a water main break flooded the 50th &amp; Penn building, taking with it more than 100,000 books or about 80% of Paperback Exchange&#8217;s inventory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"cms__embed-related-story\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kare11.com\/article\/news\/local\/breaking-the-news\/book-people-take-care-each-other-community-rallies-behind-bookstore-after-devastating-flood\/89-14b1f2e6-1fa2-4f49-b7f8-81f23bc6fe2a\" class=\"cms__embed-related-story__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Water main break leaves beloved Paperback Exchange drowning in loss<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"photo__placeholder\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/28a83c1c-ab18-4a36-96c1-8cd07b1002be_16x9.jpg\"\/><br \/>\n                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"photo__main\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/28a83c1c-ab18-4a36-96c1-8cd07b1002be_1140x641.jpg\"  alt=\"\" style=\"opacity:0\" onload=\"this.style.opacity=1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a place that I felt was a second home to me, and it was beyond devastating to see it be destroyed in that way,&#8221; Pedersen said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Back in February, owner Marion Hersey told KARE 11, &#8220;It&#8217;s too soon to really tell what will happen next.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Five months later, the business is still trying to find a way forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite it being the city&#8217;s water main that broke, Pedersen said, &#8220;Unfortunately, because the city hasn&#8217;t offered any financial compensation for what happened, a lot of businesses have been forced to close. Currently, the landlord of the Penn Place building has been forced to pay for everything out of pocket. So that means there&#8217;s still no floors, no water, no electricity. We could not commit to that building at this time just because everything is so uncertain.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pedersen, who has been working out of her home, said they&#8217;re currently looking for storefronts or even a temporary space.
