Chicago saw more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/29\/chicago-weather-winter-snow-slick-road-conditions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">snow and frigid temperatures<\/a> \u2014 all normal January fare \u2014 but the East Coast and the South were hit with ice, snowstorms and a prolonged freeze, leaving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/29\/situation-in-us-south-grows-more-dire-after-days-of-ice-frigid-temperatures-and-widespread-outages\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nearly 90 dead<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/25\/massive-winter-storm-across-nation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands without power<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the bitter cold didn\u2019t deter Minnesotans from taking to the streets after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/26\/minnesota-immigration-crackdown-court\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">second fatal shooting<\/a> at the hands of federal immigration officers in their state. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/25\/minneapolis-mourns-man-killed-border-patrol-agent\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Pretti<\/a>, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/24\/minneapolis-immigration-shooting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shot and killed<\/a> by Border Patrol agents on a commercial street in south Minneapolis on Saturday. The two officers who shot Pretti were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/28\/alex-pretti-agents-leave-minnesota\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">placed on leave,<\/a>\u00a0and on Friday, federal officials announced that the Justice Department had\u00a0opened a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/30\/federal-civil-rights-probe-alex-pretti\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">federal civil rights investigation<\/a>\u00a0into the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Pretti\u2019s killing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/29\/trump-immigration-crackdown-cultural-revolt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prompted outrage<\/a> from celebrities, public officials and everyday Americans, as backlash grows against President Donald Trump\u2019s immigration crackdown. In Chicago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/25\/alex-pretti-shooting-ice-protest\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands marched downtown<\/a> Sunday in flurries and freezing temps to protest the ongoing violence in Minneapolis, a group of nurses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/29\/alex-pretti-vigil-chicago-nurse-ice-immigration-shooting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">held a candlelight vigil<\/a> in Pretti\u2019s memory outside the local VA center and Mayor Brandon Johnson joined the chorus of voices calling to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/24\/brandon-johnson-abolish-ice-pritzker-funding-minnesota\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the week, Johnson traveled to Washington D.C., to participate in an annual gathering of U.S. mayors. While there, Chicago\u2019s mayor said the city was moving to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/28\/mayor-brandon-johnson-hold-bovino-accountable\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prosecute Border Patrol Cmdr. Gregory Bovino<\/a> for his actions during Operation Midway Blitz. Following Saturday\u2019s shooting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/26\/trump-border-czar-minnesota\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bovino left Minnesota<\/a>, and Trump\u2019s border czar, Tom Homan, is now overseeing immigration enforcement efforts in the state.<\/p>\n<p>With January winding down, Illinois\u2019 March primary election is quickly approaching. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/29\/illinois-democratic-hopefuls-for-us-senate-agree-trump-poses-constitutional-crisis-but-other-differences-emerge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two debates this week<\/a>, the Democratic hopefuls for U.S. Senate argued why they would be best equipped to take on the Trump administration if elected. While all denounced the president\u2019s mass deportation campaign, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton separated herself from the rest of the field as the sole candidate to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/26\/illinois-senate-debate-democrats-stratton-aggressor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">endorse abolishing ICE.<\/a> Southwest Side Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/28\/progressive-ald-byron-sigcho-lopez-independent-bid-congress\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threw his hat into the race<\/a> to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. Jes\u00fas \u201cChuy\u201d Garc\u00eda, and two candidates running for U.S. House in Illinois\u2019 8th Congressional District duked it out in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/29\/illinois-8th-congressional-ahmed-khot-ads-bean\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dueling ad campaigns.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In other news, a federal judge ruled that Cook County <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/29\/cook-county-loses-road-money-suit-as-judge-rules-243-million-misspent\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">misspent upwards of $243 million<\/a> in transportation tax revenues, new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/27\/snap-work-requirements-illinois\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SNAP work requirements<\/a> could leave hundreds of thousands of Illinois residents without benefits, and the former Sangamon County sheriff\u2019s deputy convicted of killing Sonya Massey was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/29\/sean-grayson-sentencing-massey-case\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sentenced to 20 years<\/a> in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/27\/patriots-seahawks-worst-super-bowl\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Super Bowl matchup<\/a> is set. The U.S. announced Tuesday it was going to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/27\/ice-agents-security-role-milan-cortina-olympics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">send ICE officers<\/a> as part of its security detail, which caused confusion and frustration in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the week,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/30\/catherine-ohara-dead-71\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Catherine O\u2019Hara<\/a>, a gifted comedic actress known for her roles in \u201cHome Alone,\u201d \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek\u201d and more, died at 71 following a brief illness. And officials throughout Cook County remembered Harvey Mayor Christopher Clark after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/30\/harvey-mayor-christopher-clark-died\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the news of his sudden passing<\/a>.
