{"id":55724,"date":"2025-07-11T02:46:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T02:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/55724\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T02:46:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T02:46:09","slug":"altadena-resident-reconnects-displaced-community-to-rebuild-nbc-los-angeles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/55724\/","title":{"rendered":"Altadena resident reconnects displaced community to rebuild \u2013 NBC Los Angeles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One Altadena resident is trying to transform the painful memories of the Eaton Fire into actionable initiatives, offering a pathway for the community to rebuild and thrive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Freddy Sayegh, who lost his home during the wildfires, decided to start <a href=\"https:\/\/thealtadena.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Altadena Coalition<\/a> six months ago with his sister in an effort to help bring together his community impacted by physical and emotional trauma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAltadena came together and bonded like a family, and those who could help stepped up to help,\u201d Sayegh said. \u201cThere is this new relationship with someone from Altadena, as if you are part of a new club. You are part of a new identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their organization hosts events at the <a href=\"https:\/\/thealtadena.org\/woodbury-co-op-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Woodbury Co-Op Center<\/a> in Altadena, which includes workshops, weekly meetings, connecting neighbors with services and providing resources on how to navigate the aftermath.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In January 2025, the Eaton Fire destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, forcing many residents to navigate insurance hurdles to housing insecurity, which Sayegh said was a catalyst for him and his sister to start the coalition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt became a driving force for me and my sister to help. It\u2019s that or be a victim of a fire,\u201d Sayegh said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sayegh\u2019s parent\u2019s, four siblings and relatives also lived and worked in Altadena, but the fires caused many of them to be displaced across Los Angeles County, forcing them to find temporary housing while they waited to rebuild. Before the fires, Sayegh\u2019s family were tightly knit where they would host large family celebrations at his parents\u2019 home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hardest part is the displacement of all my family members, from West Covina to Temple City to Monrovia, all my nephews,\u201d Sayegh said. \u201cWe just don\u2019t see each other much anymore because it\u2019s been very very difficult to get everyone together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The aftermath of the fire has caused many Altadena residents to endure every difficult step of recovery, revealing how unprepared the community was.
