While all of the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/cba-westpac-nab-anz-all-tipping-rba-rate-hike-following-bombshell-inflation-data-035958743.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Big Four banks unanimously expect a 0.25 per cent lift;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Big Four banks unanimously expect a 0.25 per cent lift<\/a> of the cash rate to 3.85 per cent on Tuesday, there\u2019s a \u201cwild card\u201d that could throw a spanner in the works.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">The <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/economy\/price-indexes-and-inflation\/consumer-price-index-australia\/latest-release\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Consumer Price Index;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Consumer Price Index<\/a> rose 3.8 per cent annually in December, up from 3.4 per cent in the year to November. Trimmed mean inflation rose 3.3 per cent annually, up from 3.2 per cent. Both are outside the central bank\u2019s target band.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/WBC.AX\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Westpac;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Westpac<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/ANZ.AX\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:ANZ;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ANZ<\/a> have now flipped their expectations and are expecting a February hike, joining <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/CBA.AX\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Commonwealth Bank;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Commonwealth Bank<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/NAB.AX\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:NAB;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NAB<\/a> who <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/commonwealth-bank-nab-make-bombshell-2026-rba-interest-rate-hike-call-prepare-030858513.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:changed their calls to a hike back in December;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">changed their calls to a hike back in December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><strong>RELATED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Commonwealth Bank head of Australia economics Belinda Allen said a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/cba-westpac-nab-anz-all-tipping-rba-rate-hike-following-bombshell-inflation-data-035958743.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:hike was needed;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hike was needed<\/a> to ensure inflation returned to the mid-point of the RBA\u2019s target band by the end of 2027, but it wasn\u2019t a done deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cA rate hike next week is our base case. But is not a forgone conclusion. There will be nuances to the debate for a rate hike by the Board. (Source: CBA\/NAB\/Westpac)      <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">NAB chief economist Sally Auld said the door was \u201cwide open\u201d for the RBA to deliver a hike on Tuesday. The bank is <a data-i13n=\"cpos:15;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/commonwealth-bank-nab-make-bombshell-2026-rba-interest-rate-hike-call-prepare-030858513.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:expecting rate hikes in February and again in May;cpos:15;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expecting rate hikes in February and again in May<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cWe should bear in mind that, as the Deputy Governor said earlier this year, it\u2019s not just about the inflation numbers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cSo the bank\u2019s reaction function is not just a mechanical response to where inflation prints, but they will step back and take a look at the bigger picture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    Story Continues  <\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Auld said inflation was clearly running stronger than they expected, along with growth, with global growth expectations also being revised up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Westpac chief economist Luci Ellis said there was a \u201csmall chance\u201d the board would hold and expected debate on the merits of holding or hiking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">\u201cWith market and public expectations already primed, though, the Board is likely to see little reason to wait,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">This would be the first time the RBA has raised interest rates since late 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Here\u2019s a summary of the major banks&#8217; predictions:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"yf-h8k6hx\">\n<li class=\"yf-h8k6hx\">\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><strong>CBA: <\/strong>One 0.25 per cent hike in February to take cash rate to 3.85 per cent<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"yf-h8k6hx\">\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><strong>Westpac: <\/strong>One 0.25 per cent hike in February to take cash rate to 3.85 per cent<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"yf-h8k6hx\">\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><strong>NAB: <\/strong>Two 0.25 per cent hikes in February and May to take cash rate to 4.10 per cent<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"yf-h8k6hx\">\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\"><strong>ANZ: <\/strong>One 0.25 per cent hike in February to take cash rate to 3.85 per cent<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">More than half (51 per cent) of the 33 experts and economists surveyed by Finder this month expect the RBA to hike the cash rate in February. This comes after just 9 per cent predicted a hike back in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">AMP chief economist Shane Oliver is one who expects the RBA will keep the cash rate on hold at 3.6 per cent, but admits it will be a &#8220;very close call&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">&#8220;On balance we think that, given the cross currents and in particular the downtrend in trimmed mean inflation, the RBA should and probably will leave rates on hold and wait for more information but it\u2019s a close call and not one we have a lot of confidence in,&#8221; Oliver said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">&#8220;We would put the probability of a hike as being around 49 per cent versus 51 per cent for a hold.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">If there is a hike, Oliver said it would be a case of &#8220;one and done&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-vbsvxt\">Finder found that <a data-i13n=\"cpos:16;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/single-phone-call-saves-aussie-first-home-owner-58000-as-rba-holds-interest-rates-simply-asked-180021275.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:homeowners;cpos:16;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">homeowners<\/a> on the average home loan of $693,802 would see an average increase of $109 to their monthly repayment should the RBA raise the cash rate on Tuesday.
