{"id":558602,"date":"2026-02-01T12:27:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T12:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/558602\/"},"modified":"2026-02-01T12:27:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T12:27:12","slug":"jackie-robinsons-dodgers-should-not-visit-the-white-house-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/558602\/","title":{"rendered":"Jackie Robinson&#8217;s Dodgers should not visit the White House again"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 1970, two years before he died, Jackie Robinson spoke at his son\u2019s high school graduation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a land where we declare that we have liberty and justice for all,\u201d Robinson said, \u201cit seems that slogan really means liberty and justice for all as long as you do and say what some people want you to do and say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those words ring uncomfortably true today.<\/p>\n<p>Robinson often spoke out on civil rights, challenging both political parties. If you <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2022-09-05\/new-jackie-robinson-museum-entertaining-educational-42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visit the Jackie Robinson Museum<\/a>, as the Dodgers did when the museum opened in 2022, you see displays on civil rights and economic opportunity and social justice before you get to the baseball showcases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJackie\u2019s passion was civil rights and equality, and more so than baseball,\u201d <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-11-02\/dodgers-manager-dave-roberts-three-world-series-titles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dodgers manager Dave Roberts<\/a> said then. \u201cIt was more of, baseball was just a vehicle for him to use his voice, which is pretty cool to see and actually pretty inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In these perilous times, in which  \u201cindivisible\u201d has been replaced by \u201cyou\u2019re with us, or you\u2019re the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2024-10-17\/election-donald-trump-national-guard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enemy within<\/a>,\u201d  Robinson\u2019s team will have the opportunity to celebrate its <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-11-01\/dodgers-defeat-toronto-blue-jays-game-7-comeback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest World Series championship<\/a> at the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Last month in Minneapolis, two American citizens were shot to death on American streets by agents of the American government. In this fragile moment, I asked Roberts if he would feel comfortable visiting the White House as the manager of Jackie Robinson\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, I stand by: I\u2019m a baseball manager,\u201d Roberts told me Saturday at the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2026-01-31\/villainous-dodgers-showing-mlb-owners-how-you-should-treat-fans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dodgers\u2019 fan festival<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s my job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was raised \u2014 by a man who served our country for 30 years \u2014 to respect the highest office in our country. For me, it doesn\u2019t matter who is in the office, I\u2019m going to go to the White House. In 1944 \u2014 three years before he broke baseball\u2019s color barrier and 11 years before Rosa Parks \u2014 <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/message-eeoc-chair-janet-dhillon-veterans-day-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robinson refused an order to move to the back of a bus<\/a>. He was an Army lieutenant, prosecuted by a military court for insubordination and then acquitted.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the killings of <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2026-01-08\/woman-killed-by-ice-agent-in-minneapolis-was-mother-of-3-poet-new-to-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Renee Good<\/a> and then <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2026-01-24\/man-killed-by-border-patrol-officer-in-minneapolis-was-icu-nurse-family-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Pretti<\/a> in Minneapolis, federal officials hurried to television cameras and social media accounts. None of the usual admonitions against leveraging tragedy for political purposes. No thoughts and prayers, even, just a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2026-01-26\/donald-trump-lie-alex-pretti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rush to dehumanize the dead<\/a> with labels such as \u201cdomestic terrorist\u201d before any investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The last words of Good, to one of those federal agents: \u201cI\u2019m not mad at you.\u201d The last words of Pretti, to someone needing assistance: \u201cAre you OK?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackie Robinson: \u201cThe right of every American to first-class citizenship is the most important issue of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the killing of Pretti last week, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MOMXJvbCEtk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the BBC exhaustively checked the claims of federal authorities against video evidence<\/a> from a variety of sources: \u201cNone of the videos we have analyzed show Alex Pretti holding a gun. There is no available evidence that he was an assassin who tried to murder federal agents, no available evidence he intended to massacre law enforcement, nor that it was a violent riot, no available evidence that this was an individual who arrived at the scene to inflict maximum damage on individuals and to kill law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Minnesota, the immigration sweeps proceed unabated. The Star Tribune <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/no-humanity-detainees-describe-conditions-inside-whipple-federal-building\/601566788\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Saturday of a local detention facility so overcrowded that a woman had been locked inside a bathroom with three men.<\/p>\n<p>In a suburban Minneapolis incident captured <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LsCAbeR1YFQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on video<\/a>, an agent tells a man he must produce citizenship documentation \u201cbecause of your accent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Huffington Post <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/ice-minneapolis-schools-children_n_697d3049e4b0b1de95c14d5c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that four children from an elementary school in a heavily Latino suburb of Minneapolis had been shipped to a detention facility in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>This is what America voted for. The <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/alabamareflector.com\/2024\/08\/26\/trump-promises-mass-deportations-of-undocumented-people-how-would-that-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cMass Deportation Now!\u201d placards at campaign rallies<\/a> in 2024 were held high.<\/p>\n<p>Yet <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/31\/us\/politics\/liam-ramos-ice-release.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a judge ordered<\/a> one of those children released Saturday, blasting what he called the \u201cill-conceived and incompetently implemented government pursuit of daily deportation quotas, apparently even if it requires traumatizing children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackie Robinson: \u201cThe most luxurious possession, the richest treasure anybody has, is his personal dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is not something the Dodgers can dismiss as an out-of-town issue. Federal immigration agents <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-06-14\/dodgers-ice-raids-protests-dylan-hernandez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">operate in Los Angeles too<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And, since Dodger Stadium has become a must-see <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-08-28\/dodgers-ultraman-japanese-company-shohei-ohtani\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japanese tourist attraction<\/a> in the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2026-01-31\/shohei-ohtani-will-not-pitch-world-baseball-classic-japan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shohei Ohtani<\/a> era, how much might tourism drop if Japanese citizens could be forbidden from entering the United States without <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/10\/us-to-inspect-tourists-social-media-history-from-past-5-years-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sharing their social media history<\/a> from the preceding five years and every personal and business email address from the preceding 10 years, as <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2025\/12\/10\/2025-22461\/agency-information-collection-activities-revision-arrival-and-departure-record-form-i-94-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">federal officials have proposed<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Jackie Robinson: \u201cTo build for leadership, one must base his standing on what is right, not what is expedient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"President Donald Trump greets manager Dave Roberts during a ceremony to honor.\"   width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1769948832_417_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>President Trump greets Dodgers manager Dave Roberts last April during a ceremony to honor the team\u2019s 2024 World Series championship. <\/p>\n<p>(Mark Schiefelbein \/ Associated Press)<\/p>\n<p>I asked <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/dodgers\/story\/2025-06-20\/dodgers-donald-trump-dodgers-imigration-enforcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dodgers president Stan Kasten<\/a> whether the team had decided to visit the White House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have any news for you on that,\u201d he said Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>To skip the trip could be uncomfortable, but the Dodgers would not have to stand on a Washington street in protest, or issue a blistering statement. All they would need to do is decline a photo opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>The Dodgers are free to make their own decision, of course. They\u2019ll be in Washington for their first road series of the season, in the first week of April. Then they\u2019ll return to Dodger Stadium, for the annual Jackie Robinson Day festivities.<\/p>\n<p>For me, going to the White House would feel more expedient than right.
