\u201cAlarming news continues to arrive from the Middle East, especially from Iran,\u201d said Pope Leo on Sunday at the Angelus address.<\/p>\n
The Holy Father\u2019s words came just hours after US bombers struck nuclear sites in Iran, as Israel and Iran carry out strikes on each other\u2019s territory.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this dramatic scenario, which includes Israel and Palestine,\u201d continued the Pope, \u201cthe daily suffering of the population\u2014especially in Gaza and other territories\u2014risks being forgotten, even as the need for adequate humanitarian aid becomes ever more urgent.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cToday more than ever, humanity cries out and pleads for peace,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Pope said the cry for peace \u201cdemands responsibility and reason and must not be drowned out by the roar of weapons or by rhetorical words that incite conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pope Leo urged every member of the international community to take up their moral responsibility to \u201cstop the tragedy of war before it becomes an irreparable abyss.\u201d<\/p>\n
When human dignity is at stake, he said, no conflict is distant.<\/p>\n
\u201cWar does not solve problems,\u201d noted the Pope. \u201cOn the contrary, it amplifies them and causes deep wounds in the history of peoples\u2014wounds that take generations to heal. No military victory can ever compensate for a mother\u2019s pain, a child\u2019s fear, or a stolen future.\u201d<\/p>\n
