When grilled for his thoughts on David Corenswet\u2019s performance as Superman while literally hooked up to a lie detector, \u201cSuperman\u201d<\/a> co-star Nicholas Hoult reluctantly admitted that there were moments while filming that he thought he\u2019d have a better take on the Man of Steel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would\u2019ve been astonished if the answer was no,\u201d Corenswet reassured Hoult on the latest installment of the Vanity Fair lie detector interview series. <\/p>\n

You see, Hoult previously revealed that before getting cast as Superman\u2019s tech billionaire arch nemesis Lex Luthor, he auditioned to play the titular hero himself. Of course, the role ended up going to the lesser-known breakout Corenswet, and Hoult has been nothing but praising of his performance throughout the press tour ahead of Friday\u2019s theatrical release.<\/p>\n

But when hooked to a lie detector, how\u2019d he really feel? <\/p>\n

\u201cYou recently revealed that you also auditioned for the role of Superman,\u201d Corenswet quizzed. \u201cWas there ever a moment during one of our scenes together where you \u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is going to be a funny question. Where I thought, \u2018I can do it better than that?\u2019\u201d Hoult interjected, adding: \u201cIf I was doing this quiz, that\u2019s what I would ask.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat, take a breath,\u201d Corenswet said as Hoult geared up to respond. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m already stressed,\u201d Hoult joked.<\/p>\n

As the actor, also known for \u201cSkins,\u201d \u201cMad Max: Fury Road\u201d and last year\u2019s \u201cNosferatu,\u201d continued to stall, Corenswet teasingly got heated: \u201cF\u2014king yes or no!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Hoult said, and Vanity Fair\u2019s lie detector technician confirmed he was telling the truth. Corenswet, for his part, stood up and shook Hoult\u2019s hand out of respect for being honest.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you know I didn\u2019t really think it,\u201d Hoult said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, all actors think that at some point,\u201d Corenswet assured. \u201cWhat f\u2014king scene was it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I don\u2019t know, I\u2019m actually trying to think,\u201d Hoult said. \u201cBut you know what it was? It wasn\u2019t actually ever that. I auditioned to play Superman, and so I know how difficult it is to play that character, because it is very difficult. So actually, a majority of the time, watching you I was impressed by how easy you made it look and how dynamic and what you brought to that character, because that was special. So that\u2019s more, there was lots of other thoughts when I was answering that question, and when I watched you play that character.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time Hoult has opened up about his casting trajectory with the project, nor is it the first time he\u2019s praised his co-star for being the perfect Superman. <\/p>\n

\u201cI just loved the script that James wrote, it\u2019s such a fresh, new take on this character. And seeing what David did on set and then seeing it on screen, he\u2019s such a wonderful Superman,\u201d Hoult said on \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d<\/a> last month. \u201cHe\u2019s so charismatic and emotional and he gives it such dynamism and it\u2019s just a wonderful interpretation of the character, so I\u2019m very proud to be in the movie with him as Superman because it\u2019s a new Superman for a new generation, and he\u2019s done a wonderful job as that character.\u201d<\/p>\n
