A few weeks ago, former Boston Celtics and current Milwaukee Bucks<\/a> head coach Doc Rivers made the decision to address the state violent encounters in the state of Minnesota that left a pair of local citizens dead, after engaging with the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. Rivers went as far as to say, “I think everyday people, all of us, should speak up if we think something’s morally wrong. What happened in Minnesota was a straight-up murder.”<\/p>\n

In town with the Bucks to play his former ball club \u2013 with whom he helped win an NBA title in 2008 \u2013 Rivers was asked is he still felt the same way about the events in question, and whether he meant murder in the legal or moral sense. “Both.” came the reply from the erstwhile Celtics coach. “And I don’t change that at all. You know, my dad was a cop. My best friend is a cop, and he’s probably more upset about it than me.”<\/p>\n

“I thought the training of ICE is horrible,” he added. “We all know that. And being in Minnesota, where there’s 130,000, I think, documented people. Why not Texas, where there’s 1.7 million undocumented? I look at our league, look at the NBA, we’re celebrating Pioneer’s Day today, right? And I looked at our league, and I think\u2026 (Hakeem) Olajuwon could have been taken off the streets.”<\/p>\n

“But right now, the way brown people feel, only the brown people would be taken off the streets,” said Rivers. “And it’s just not right, and it’s not morally right, so I stand by my words 100%.”<\/p>\n

Asked if he thought brown people in the US legally should be worried about ICE, the Bucks coach replied, “Yeah, we all should be.”<\/p>\n

“Yes, if you’re walking down the street and Tom Homan, who was the head (of ICE). He just has said that they’re targeting people by their color and if they can speak the language. If you’re brown, you’re nervous, because I don’t see anybody going in the Ukrainian villages and arresting anybody. All we can go by is what we see, that’s all I can go by.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“I’m not saying I’m 100% right about everything,” said Rivers. “I think we all, everybody in this room, I would say, wants a safer America. I don’t know if what we’re doing right now is making us safer. I know there’s two people in Minnesota that would definitely disagree with that.”<\/p>\n
