Is a calendar Slam next?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) \u2014 Carlos Alcaraz had Novak Djokovic across the net from him and Rafael Nadal watching from above in Rod Laver Arena.<\/p>\n<p>His inspiration, and his idol.<\/p>\n<p>Alcaraz had visions of this as a kid \u2014 not entirely long ago, in the scheme of things \u2014 so there was no better time to show them what he\u2019d learned from watching the two all-time greats, or borrowed from their aura.<\/p>\n<p>He had a comeback, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/djokovic-alcaraz-australian-open-mens-final-tennis-19b202a11e154e7035b6fee1545d2b3b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four-set win over Djokovic<\/a> and walked away from the Australian Open final Sunday as the youngest man ever to complete a career Grand Slam \u2014 that\u2019s winning all four of the tennis majors.<\/p>\n<p>At 22 and 272 days of age, he\u2019s considerably younger than Nadal (24) and Djokovic (29) were when they achieved that milestone, lowering a mark that Don Budge set in 1938 when he was a couple of days shy of his 23rd birthday. <\/p>\n<p>No sooner had he completed the career Slam \u2014 adding his first victory in Australia to his two each at Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the U.S. Open \u2014 than the question was posed about a run at the calendar Grand Slam. That\u2019s all four major titles in one season, something no man has achieved since Rod Laver in 1969.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are big words, to be honest,\u201d said Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion at Roland Garros. \u201cYou know, I just want it to be one at a time. Right now next one is French Open. I have great memories in that tournament. I feel really special every time that I go there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to put myself in a really pressure position to have to do it, but you know, it\u2019s going to be great. Right now I will try to be ready &#8230; to play a good tournament in the next Grand Slam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A set down after Djokovic\u2019s opening salvo, Alcaraz channeled the legends and changed up his game to upset the rhythm. It worked. He\u2019s now the only man to capture seven major titles before his 23rd birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have dominated the majors since Djokovic won the last of his <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/djokovic-alcaraz-grand-slam-australian-open-cbae920be98a0b1f39c47ef20d35f6b7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">24 Grand Slam titles<\/a> at the 2023 U.S. Open, with one or the other winning the last nine. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/alcaraz-zverev-sinner-djokovic-australian-semifinals-dace8fb9ff848d6f6a77f2079818eac6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sinner was aiming for a third consecutive title in Australia<\/a>, but lost in five sets to 10-time Australian champion Djokovic in the semifinals. <\/p>\n<p>There were many who questioned the decision when <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tennis-alcaraz-ferrero-coach-parting-ways-89fb72c2766ba88cbad3c97cd9256860\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alcaraz and long-time coach Juan Carlos Ferrero parted ways<\/a> after the young Spaniard won the last <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-open-trump-final-alcaraz-sinner-3852812d92685c24cb56b1db9e83adec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Open<\/a>, and who doubted his chances of being ready to win a first title in Australia.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/alcaraz-coach-tennis-lopez-ferrero-3e042e7e65ec5a37581ff005f055a0fa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samuel Lopez<\/a> stepped up to head the team, and Alcaraz admitted the pre-season had been \u201ca roller coaster for me emotionally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people were having doubts about my level in this tournament,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery year that I came here to Australia I was thinking about getting the trophy (but) couldn\u2019t go further than quarterfinals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2026, he said he arrived at Melbourne Park \u201chungry for more, ambitious for getting the trophy, and being strong mentally enough, not hearing anything or any words\u201d from critics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then just playing good tennis in this tournament means a lot, means the world to me,\u201d he said, \u201cand it is a dream come true for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With his latest bid for an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam singles title stymied, Djokovic could at least joke about the 16-year age gap between himself and Alcaraz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, first time I played him, he was, what, 11 or 12 years old?\u201d he said, smiling. \u201cNo, he was, I think, 18 or 19. You could already see that he\u2019s destined for great things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has improved physically, mentally, game-wise.
