A search by the South China Morning Post on China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), one of the country\u2019s largest academic research databases, showed the number of papers on the subject more than doubled from 2023 to 2025 compared with the preceding three years.<\/p>\n<p>De-dollarisation gained further traction as global economic uncertainty intensified following the start of US President Donald Trump\u2019s second term in early 2025. After launching a <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/knowledge\/topics\/us-china-trade-war\/news?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">global trade war<\/a> in April, Washington <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/politics\/article\/3338994\/maduro-effect-us-raid-accelerates-asias-drift-away-washington?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">abducted then-Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro<\/a> in early January \u2013 staking a claim to the South American nation\u2019s oil reserves \u2013 and threatened <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/world\/europe\/article\/3340351\/eu-considers-us108-billion-retaliatory-tariffs-us-over-trumps-greenland-threat?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">eight European allies with tariffs<\/a> after they pushed back against Trump\u2019s vow to acquire, and potentially seize, resource-rich Danish territory Greenland.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Chinese scholars have called for greater urgency in reducing reliance on US dollar assets, particularly after Washington and its allies froze about US$300 billion in Russian foreign exchange reserves in 2022.
