(Freepik)<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gh.bmj.com\/content\/10\/12\/e017392\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"study\">study<\/a> by researchers at the Centre for Cancer Epidemiology and Homi Bhabha National Institute found that more than 6 out of 10 oral cancer cases in India are linked to alcohol and the use of smokeless tobacco products such as gutkha, khaini, and paan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">According to the study, 62% of all oral cancers in the country result from a combination of tobacco and alcohol use. Second, <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/topic\/alcohol-consumption\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"alcohol consumption\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">alcohol consumption<\/a> increases the permeability of your oral tissue, allowing harmful substances to easily enter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">He adds, \u201cThird, because alcohol reduces saliva production, your mouth can no longer function properly as a natural defence mechanism, which can lead to inflammation. If these factors occur continuously over time, they interfere with normal cell repair and increase the likelihood of a cell becoming cancerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Early signs and symptoms of oral cancer<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSigns of oral cancer can be identified early on by showing signs of almost constant white or red discolouration of tissue (known as patches) inside the mouth; experiencing difficulty opening the mouth fully; bleeding but not knowing why; having loose teeth and pain while eating and swallowing,\u201d explains Dr Sandeep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u201cIf you experience these symptoms for more than 2 to 3 weeks, you should visit a doctor, as early detection can improve outcomes and help with a timely diagnosis,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>What are the risk factors<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many factors that could contribute to your likelihood of developing <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/lifestyle\/health\/oncologist-explains-5-silent-warning-signs-of-early-stage-oral-cancer-and-why-people-miss-them-often-101769525376051.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"oral cancer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">oral cancer<\/a>, including tobacco and alcohol use, but some other risk factors associated with oral cancer are:-<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u25cf Poor oral hygiene<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u25cf Chronic irritation to the mouth, such as when an edge of a tooth is sharp<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u25cf Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u25cf Excessive sun exposure to the lips<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u25cf Long-term inflammation in the oral cavity<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">Other lifestyle issues and genetic factors could also increase your chances,\u201d says Dr Nayak.<\/p>\n<p>Precautions to consider<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEliminating tobacco and alcohol from your life is probably the most important thing you can do to lower your chances of ever developing oral cancer. But there are other steps you can take to help prevent oral cancer, including:-<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u25cf Going to the <a class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/topic\/dentist\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"dentist\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dentist<\/a> to check up on your mouth frequently and get those dental issues treated before they get too big<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u25cf Taking good care of your mouth by keeping it clean<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u25cf Eating a well-balanced diet<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u25cf Being screened for oral cancer on a regular basis<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">\u25cf Knowing what the signs and symptoms of oral cancer are<\/p>\n<p class=\"content \">&#8220;There are different pathways for developing oral cancer, and the HPV vaccine to reduce risk is one of those pathways.
