Groundhogs across the country, including the Chicago area’s own famous Woodstock Willie, will make their annual predictions on Monday, answering a pivotal question: will spring arrive early or will we see six more weeks of winter?<\/p>\n
As legend has it, a groundhog seeing their shadow predicts another six weeks of winter. On the other hand, no sight of a shadow means an early spring.<\/p>\n
Festivities will get underway in suburban Woodstock, where the community’s iconic groundhog, Woodstock Willie, ascended to fame thanks to the city’s connection to the 1993 cult classic film “Groundhog Day.”<\/p>\n
The day of events begins in the town square at 6:30 a.m., with Woodstock Willie delivering his prediction at 7 a.m.<\/p>\n
In a reenactment from the movie, a Polka band will be playing in the bandstand “to wake Woodstock Willie from his winter nap.”<\/p>\n
A major celebration is also planned in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, the birthplace of Groundhog Day. Last year, its beloved groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, saw its shadow – predicting another six weeks of winter.<\/p>\n
But Woodstock Willie didn’t follow suit. <\/p>\n
The suburban Chicago groundhog didn’t see its shadow and instead predicted in early spring. <\/p>\n
