{"id":560579,"date":"2026-02-02T08:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T08:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/560579\/"},"modified":"2026-02-02T08:56:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T08:56:09","slug":"with-scottsdale-schools-closing-boundary-changes-loom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/560579\/","title":{"rendered":"With Scottsdale schools closing, boundary changes loom |"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">A new Arizona Auditor General report lists Scottsdale Unified School District as \u201chigh risk,\u201d citing enrollment declining by 7% over four years and budget limit reserve\/operating budget falling 43% in one year.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAlthough the district was not identified among the highest-risk districts,\u201d the report on SUSD notes, \u201creview of the district\u2019s data indicates that the district may be moving toward the highest-risk category.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe notified the district of this status and will continue to monitor its risks along with all other districts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SUSD administration is addressing those issues by &#8220;reducing the district&#8217;s footprint&#8221; via school closures.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">At a special meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, SUSD administration will present \u201cinformation regarding potential boundary changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The SUSD Governing Board will not be voting at the Feb. 2 hearing, with a vote on boundary changes expected at the board\u2019s Feb. 10 meeting.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The public meeting will be held in the Governing Board Room located at Coronado High School, 7501 E. Virginia Ave.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The meeting follows the board\u2019s December decision to close and &#8220;repurpose&#8221; Pima and Echo Canyon elementary schools.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Closing the two schools at the end of this school year will save the cash-strapped district around $2.5 million, according to recent presentations.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to the agenda for the Feb. 2 meeting, \u201cThe purpose of this meeting is to obtain public comment regarding potential attendance boundary changes for students currently enrolled or residing in the boundaries for Pima Elementary School.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">SUSD administration is proposing \u201cthree alternatives regarding changes to the current attendance boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The options to be considered:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dividing students currently residing in the Pima Elementary School boundaries between Navajo Elementary School and Yavapai Elementary School.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dividing students currently residing in the Pima Elementary School boundaries among Hohokam Elementary School, Yavapai Elementary School and Navajo Elementary School.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dividing students currently residing in the Pima Elementary School boundaries between Hohokam Elementary School and Yavapai Elementary School.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Option 1 would expand current boundaries for Mohave Middle School.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Option 2 would expand current boundaries for Mohave Middle School and Saguaro High School.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Option 3 would not change feeder patterns in the Coronado complex.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAt this public meeting,\u201d the agenda notes, \u201cattending members of the Governing Board of the Scottsdale Unified School District will gather public input regarding the proposed boundary changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cSpeakers will be limited to two minutes and must be present to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This process is likely to be repeated \u2013 perhaps on a larger scale \u2013 next year.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Pima and Echo Canyon closures are Phase I of Superintendent Scott Menzel\u2019s plan to \u201creduce the district\u2019s footprint,\u201d due to steadily falling enrollment.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In the coming months, the board will consider Menzel\u2019s \u201cPhase II.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In November, Menzel revealed six schools on his \u201cproposed implementation of restructuring in 2027-28\u201d list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Anasazi K-5 (407 students);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Copper Ridge K-8 (440 students);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Laguna K-5 (302 students);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Redfield K-5 (376 students);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tonalea Middle 6-8 (364 students);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Yavapai K-5 (345 students).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Though it was not on Menzel\u2019s previous list, Cheyenne Traditional School also has the dubious honor of \u201cmaking the list\u201d of schools that may be closed\/repurposed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to a district spokeswoman, \u201cthe district has discussed the possibility of combining two Phase II schools into the Cheyenne campus, while relocating Cheyenne students to a larger campus better suited to accommodate the high level of interest in attending Cheyenne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As Menzel told the board last month:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe need to reduce our footprint by at least
