(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2008:<\/strong> Five women \u2014 42-year-old store manager Rhoda McFarland of Joliet; Jennifer Bishop, 34, of South Bend, Indiana; Sarah Szafranski, 22, of Oak Forest; Connie Woolfolk, 37, of Flossmoor; and Carrie Hudek Chiuso, 33, of Frankfort \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/02\/01\/slayings-of-5-women-at-lane-bryant-store-in-our-thoughts-in-our-heads-every-single-day-tinley-park-police-say-at-15th-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were killed<\/a>, shot execution-style, inside a Lane Bryant women\u2019s clothing store in Tinley Park by a gunman who <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-5-women-slain-inside-lan\/164222493\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posed as a delivery man<\/a>. A sixth woman, also a store employee, was shot in the neck but survived and provided police with a description of the killer. Sears\u2019 national headquarters was based here on a 55-acre site. Operations moved to the new Sears Tower headquarters in 1973, then to Hoffman Estates in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Sears <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2018\/04\/13\/sears-to-close-last-store-in-chicago-the-city-that-helped-launch-its-growth-into-a-major-retail-presence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closed<\/a> its last Chicago store in 2018.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyloading\" alt=\"The only North American elevated on Feb. 2, 1983, in Vatican City to the Sacred College of Cardinals, Joseph Bernardin was the fifth archbishop of Chicago to receive the red biretta and scarlet robes of the office. (Charles Bennett\/AP)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1999:<\/strong> Former Chicago Bears running back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/09\/05\/ranking-the-100-best-bears-players-ever-no-1-walter-payton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walter Payton<\/a> announced that he had <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-walter-were-in-this-to\/165188555\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)<\/a>, a rare, life-threatening liver disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people that really care about me, if you could continue to pray.
