{"id":56280,"date":"2025-07-11T07:40:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T07:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/56280\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T07:40:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T07:40:08","slug":"chula-vista-trash-collection-disrupted-as-workers-join-nationwide-strike-san-diego-union-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/56280\/","title":{"rendered":"Chula Vista trash collection disrupted as workers join nationwide strike \u2013 San Diego Union-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chula Vista residents and some businesses were without trash and recycling collection on Thursday as Republic Services workers joined a nationwide strike.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of employees from various states are on strike or honoring the picket line, demanding fair pay and benefits while their union, the Teamsters, and the company work to settle new contracts in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublic abuses and underpays workers across the country,\u201d Sean M. O\u2019Brien, Teamsters president, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/teamster.org\/2025\/07\/teamsters-go-to-war-against-republic-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> Wednesday. \u201cWe will flood the streets and shut down garbage collection in state after state. Workers are uniting nationwide, and we will get the wages and benefits we\u2019ve earned, come hell or high water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then, workers have been expanding their picketing to other locations, including Chula Vista.<\/p>\n<p>Republic, which is Chula Vista\u2019s lone waste hauler, acknowledged the local service interruptions and said in a statement Thursday that it is \u201cmaking adjustments to our operations and working to resume regular service as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResidents are advised to leave their containers out,\u201d the waste hauler added. \u201cWe apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teamsters Local 542, which represents Chula Vista-based Republic workers, did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Chula Vista Mayor John McCann said he was hopeful that customers would have their service restored by Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy understanding is that they\u2019re essentially doing a one-day sympathy strike in solidarity with the workers in Boston,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, services may resume tomorrow. \u2026 But then again, you never know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCann said that he hoped the issues in Boston would not \u201cbleed over to the city of Chula Vista.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In December 2021, more than 250 sanitation workers walked off the job in Chula Vista to protest stalled contract negotiations between Republic and the Teamsters. The work stoppage ended in January 2022 after striking trash haulers accepted Republic Services\u2019 final contract offer. And in July 2022, the city and Republic settled for the costs the city incurred during the strike that affected customers in Bonita, Chula Vista, Clairemont and other parts of San Diego County.<\/p>\n<p>Chula Vista spent about $107,000 on equipment and had its staff and third parties pick up trash because of the work stoppage.
