{"id":56308,"date":"2025-07-11T07:54:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T07:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/56308\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T07:54:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T07:54:15","slug":"nyc-cracks-down-on-drug-infested-broadway-of-the-bronx","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/56308\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC cracks down on drug-infested &#8216;Broadway of The Bronx&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The NYPD along with a cohort of other city agencies flooded the seedy <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/09\/us-news\/business-as-usual-at-the-grimy-drug-infested-broadway-of-the-bronx-worst-ive-ever-seen-it\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Bronx district <\/a>dubbed the \u201cBroadway of the Bronx\u201d \u2014 booting drug addicts and vagrants from the area and cleaning up their trash. <\/p>\n<p>Police put up barricades Thursday blocking access to Roberto Clemente Plaza, the pedestrian park and heart of the \u201cThe Hub\u201d at the crossroads of Willis Avenue, East 149th Street and Third Avenue that for years has been overrun with strung-out junkies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not going to let that Hub go back to where it was. This is going to be our ground zero here in The Bronx,\u201d declared Kaz Daughtry, deputy mayor for public safety.<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD and multiple agencies across the city are heading to what has been dubbed the \u201cBroadway of the Bronx\u201d to combat the rampant drug problem in the area and clean up the trash that surrounds the area. Ribeiro for New York Post<\/p>\n<p>The city Office of Emergency Management, one of more than a half dozen agencies that swept in to stabilize the area, set up a new command center in the plaza, according to Camille Joseph Varlack, deputy mayor for administration.<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD has added patrols and the Department of Transportation has beefed up enforcement in and around the plaza.<\/p>\n<p>More lighting has been erected at each end of the plaza, Varlack told The Post in a joint interview with Daughtry.<\/p>\n<p>She vowed a concerted, long-term effort to stabilize The Hub akin to the city effort <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/24\/us-news\/nypd-crackdown-on-seedy-migrant-market-of-sweethearts-gets-results-but-sex-workers-still-have-tricks-up-sleeve\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to clean up Roosevelt <\/a>Avenue in Queens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not just about the optics of cleaning it up. We are really about trying to deal with the underlying issues,\u201d Varlack said.<\/p>\n<p>Local leaders have pointed to the dozens of nearby drug treatment facilities as the source of the plaza\u2019s problems.<\/p>\n<p>Barricades were put up at the heart of \u201cThe Hub\u201d blocking access to the Roberto Clemente Plaza where strung-out druggies have been constantly around the area for years. Ribeiro for New York Post<\/p>\n<p>Many of the addicts, homeless individuals and other vagrants congregate in The Hub, scaring customers from patronizing surrounding businesses, merchants said.<\/p>\n<p>The city cleanup effort was launched just hours after <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/09\/us-news\/rep-ritchie-torres-blasts-nyc-for-failing-to-clean-up-broadway-of-the-bronx-as-report-finds-its-overrun-with-junkies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bronx Rep. Ritchie Torres <\/a>sent Mayor Eric Adams an SOS letter and released a hard-hitting report detailing the hellish conditions in the area. <\/p>\n<p>Varlack said the mayor\u2019s office will meet with state officials regarding the licensing oversight and siting of drug treatment programs.<\/p>\n<p>The state Office of Addiction Services and Supports licenses substance abuse treatment programs, but the city oversees zoning that governs where facilities can be located.<\/p>\n<p>A new command center was set up in the plaza by the city Office of Emergency Management while increasing lighting and officials patrolling the plaza. I hope the mayor\u2019s response will be sustained,\u201d Torres said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m grateful the mayor has made cleaning up The Hub a priority in the short term. We need a commitment in the long run.
