{"id":563724,"date":"2026-02-03T16:58:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T16:58:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/563724\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T16:58:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T16:58:15","slug":"vanessa-gibson-sworn-in-for-second-term-as-bronx-borough-president-at-lehman-center-for-the-performing-arts-bronx-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/563724\/","title":{"rendered":"Vanessa Gibson sworn in for second term as Bronx Borough President at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts \u2013 Bronx Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds gathered at the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts for the second inauguration of Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson.\n<\/p>\n<p>Performances by the Renaissance Youth Center and Celia Cruz High School of Music set the stage for the evening.\n<\/p>\n<p>Gibson was elected as borough president for the second time after securing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/11\/04\/us\/elections\/results-bronx-borough-president.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">83% of the vote<\/a> in the November 2025 election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, our blueprint is \u2018the Bronx leads\u2019 which is an affirmation and it\u2019s a call to action with a focus on our borough as the next chapter\u2026 For too long, the Bronx has led in everything challenging and was lost in everything that is good,\u201d Gibson said.<\/p>\n<p>She said her administration has a strategic plan to address inequalities that have \u201ccontributed to years of decline and disinvestment\u201d in public schools and educational facilities.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-139578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gibson-for-story-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"560\"  \/>Students perform at Vanessa Gibson\u2019s second inauguration at the Lehman Center. Courtesy of the Bronx Borough President\u2019s office\n<\/p>\n<p>Building off accomplishments in education, healthcare, small businesses, housing and culture, Gibson shared what\u2019s in store for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>For education, her office will continue to work in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/bronxboropres.nyc.gov\/education\/#:~:text=Bronx%20Higher%20Education%20Task%20Force.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bronx Higher Education Task Force<\/a> by connecting college students with career readiness programs and initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be working with our community partners to host a young adult employment fair with a focus on connecting 16 to 24 year olds to long-term employment. A stable job, folks, can transform a person\u2019s life and is part of our overall larger effort to connect all of our residents with career pathways,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>At the intersection of education, music and culture, the borough president said that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2025\/12\/18\/officials-say-the-bronx-school-of-hip-hop-is-first-of-its-kind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bronx School of Hip Hop<\/a> will be opening in the South Bronx in September 2026, the first of its kind.<\/p>\n<p>Gibson also expressed her excitement to support the initiative for the revitalization of Greater Morris Park, which received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-hochul-announces-new-york-city-winner-downtown-revitalization-initiative-and-ny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$20 million grant<\/a> from Governor Kathy Hochul and the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI).<\/p>\n<p>This grant will support efforts to enhance the quality of life for residents by spurring economic opportunity and strengthening local corridors.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-139579\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gibson-for-story-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"560\"  \/>Vanessa Gibson waves to the audience at her second inauguration as Bronx Borough President. Courtesy of the Bronx Borough President\u2019s office\n<\/p>\n<p>Her administration will continue to address healthcare and health disparities in the Bronx by launching a Bronx Asthma and Respiratory Health Equity initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will include strong advocacy for a new Bronx asthma center that will be a centralized hub for prevention care, coordination, research and community education,\u201d Gibson said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis initiative will address air quality, housing conditions and environmental injustice, tackling the root causes that unfortunately make asthma a daily reality for too many of our Bronx children and families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gibson is committed to working with her colleagues and advocates to expand access to care for mothers before, during and after childbirth.\n<\/p>\n<p>With a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/video-audio-photos-rush-transcript-money-your-pockets-governor-hochul-highlights-new\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$5 million capital investment<\/a> from Governor Hochul, there will be a Bronx-based birthing center to combat maternal mortality rates.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-139580\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gibson-for-story-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"560\"  \/>Vanessa Gibson is sworn in again as Bronx Borough President at Lehman Center. Courtesy of the Bronx Borough President\u2019s office<\/p>\n<p>Making home ownership accessible to all Bronx families is another next steps her administration wants to take.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwning a home is a powerful step towards building generational wealth, building equity and pathways to the middle class and providing long-term stability for families and our future generations,\u201d Gibson added.<\/p>\n<p>On March 4 at Bronx Borough Hall, her office is hosting an information session connecting homeowners with housing related resources and experts to give residents the confidence to pursue and sustain homeownership.<\/p>\n<p>Lucas Hjertberg, a senior at Fordham University, attended the event with his classmates because the borough president has visited and championed projects at the university like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/opinion\/bronx-lead-nation-green-jobs-new-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bronx Green Jobs Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bronx does lead in many ways, whether it\u2019s the culture of the Bronx, the people of the Bronx in leading the city forward and is always an underrepresented area of the city,\u201d Hjertberg said. \u201cSo it\u2019s exciting to see [the Bronx] lead with this name and the initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi Fry, another Fordham college student, was excited to see Vanessa Gibson speak and share her vision and plans for the Bronx.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust as a Black woman, it\u2019s always wonderful to see another Black woman pursuing something that\u2019s similar to my dream and just succeeding overall,\u201d Fry said.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-139581\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gibson-for-story-5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"560\"  \/>Vanessa Gibson giving her thank you speak. Courtesy of the Bronx Borough President\u2019s office\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that affordable housing has to be a number one priority for her, just because there\u2019s a lot of efforts to kind of push locals out and natives out, and that\u2019s something that you can\u2019t have,\u201d she said. \u201cA city loses its character when its natives leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marin Zahran attended the event to support her family who works in Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson\u2019s office and wanted to learn more about her future plans.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think seeing all of the new initiatives that are coming to fruition this year is really exciting. The education initiatives \u2014 especially for the arts. She cares and she wants to see the Bronx lead,\u201d Zahran said. \u201cIt\u2019s really exciting to see how far [the Bronx] has come in the last four years and to see her aggressive campaign forward to really help us be the best borough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elita Hodges, a college advisor in the Bronx, attended the inauguration to learn more about the borough president\u2019s educational endeavors for the next four years.
