{"id":564613,"date":"2026-02-04T01:56:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T01:56:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/564613\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T01:56:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T01:56:16","slug":"up-to-100000-dead-fish-found-on-bank-of-lake-menindee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/564613\/","title":{"rendered":"Up to 100,000 dead fish found on bank of Lake Menindee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A fish kill has been found at Sunset Strip, a community on the bank of Lake Menindee in far west New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Residents first became aware of the event on Monday afternoon, finding tens of thousands of dead fish, mostly native bony bream and some carp, lining the river banks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It came after a week of record-breaking heat, followed by a sharp decrease in temperature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The discovery was less than three years after a mass fish kill in which <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-03-18\/nsw-menindee-mass-fish-kill-worst-in-region\/102115184\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tens of millions of native species were found floating along the nearby Darling River.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A shock, not a surprise<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Darren Clifton was on his way to go fishing on Monday afternoon when he noticed something glittering in the grass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We could see these silver flashes and we came down to have a look and found thousands upon thousands of dead bony bream,&#8221; Mr Clifton said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A dead silver fish in green water.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0c74832e7f11b9e719881877f9289ddf.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Areas of Lake Menindee have been under red alerts for blue-green algae. he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Some pockets of water on the other side of the lake have red alerts for blue-green algae; you have to put the two together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cleaning begins<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Menindee branch of the Barkandji River Rangers, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-06-06\/barkandji-people-back-on-country-to-protect-traditional-land\/102442338\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102442338\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which blends local Aboriginal ancestral knowledge and modern conservation methods to protect and preserve natural assets like the Menindee Lakes<\/a>, has been monitoring the nearby waterways after the hot weather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Barkandji Native Title Group Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC chief executive Luke Driscoll, whose organisation oversees the ranger program, said hundreds of dead fish, mostly carp, had been removed from the Darling River near Menindee last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We ascertained last week that they were coming from the lake, which means there were fish struggling in the lake,&#8221; Mr Driscoll said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man looks at a pile of dead fish. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/30a43a50a42d082bc79b67759de1afe8.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Mr Driscoll and his rangers have started to clean up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 (ABC Broken Hill: Coquohalla Connor)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We couldn&#8217;t figure out the actual source [of] where they were dying, [but] obviously it&#8217;s a very big lake, 3.5 times the size of Sydney Harbour in terms of water.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Driscoll, a Wiradjuri man, said he was not surprised more dead fish had been found after a rapid temperature drop across the region over the weekend, but it did not make the sight any less devastating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s really upsetting to see this many native fish that have been washed up on the shore of this lake [which are] obviously a very important part of our Barkandji culture,&#8221;
