Police have condemned the actions of about 40 e-bike riders who rode over the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Tuesday as “stupid and downright dangerous”.<\/p>\n

The message came as officers prepare to comb over CCTV and social media footage of the incident in a bid to hunt down teens they say broke several laws during the stunt.<\/p>\n

Videos from the e-bike meet-up showed several youths doing wheelies on their way to the city landmark, where bicycles are forbidden to ride alongside cars.<\/p>\n

“Apart from that behaviour being illegal, it was incredibly irresponsible, stupid and downright dangerous,” Highway Patrol Commander David Driver said.<\/p>\n

“The e-bike riders made U-turns in front of oncoming traffic, and indeed heavy vehicles had to brake and avoid them.<\/p>\n

“That incident had the potential for a number of people to be seriously injured or killed.”<\/p>\n

Assistant Commissioner Driver defended police’s actions when asked why officers patrolling around the group as they made their way across the city failed to intervene.<\/p>\n

He said parents who recognise their children in videos widely shared on social media should be having a “strong conversation” with them.<\/p>\n

“<\/strong>This could have very easily ended in many deaths. It was outright dangerous. I’m struggling to find the adjective,” Assistant Commissioner Driver said.<\/p>\n

“We don’t want to be knocking on your door and telling you that your child has been killed in one of these stupid e-bike events.<\/p>\n

“It’s extremely frustrating for all of us dealing with this issue.”<\/p>\n

Assistant Commissioner Driver said police had identified school uniforms and bike registrations in the footage, warning riding a bike on the harbour bridge carries a $460 fine.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday afternoon, NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury called for e-bikes to be outlawed on all public roads.<\/p>\n

“Parents have gotta stop buying kids these bikes, and we need to find ways to ensure they cannot be tampered with,” Mr Khoury said.<\/p>\n
