{"id":566338,"date":"2026-02-04T19:23:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T19:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/566338\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T19:23:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T19:23:10","slug":"supreme-court-upholds-new-california-congressional-districts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/566338\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court upholds new California congressional districts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/us-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Supreme Court<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday allowed California to use a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/california-redistricting-congress-election-661fbe88aa65d858fdfb4f119f4f92b2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">voter-approved congressional map<\/a>\u00a0that is favorable to Democrats in this year\u2019s elections, rejecting a last-ditch plea from state Republicans and the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>The justices had previously allowed Texas\u2019 Republican-friendly map to be used in 2026, despite a lower court ruling that it likely discriminates on the basis of race.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative Justice Samuel Alito wrote in December that it appeared both states had adopted new maps for political advantage, which the high court has previously ruled cannot be a basis for a federal lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans, joined by the administration, <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/politics\/2025\/12\/16\/republicans-ask-federal-court-overturn-california-prop-50-maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">claimed the California map<\/a> improperly relied on race, as well. But a <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/politics\/2026\/01\/14\/federal-judges-uphold-new-california-congressional-districts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">lower court disagreed<\/a> by a 2-1 vote.<\/p>\n<p>The justices\u2019 unsigned order keeps in place districts that are designed to flip up to five seats now held by Republicans, part of <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/05\/voters-in-san-diego-and-across-state-overwhelmingly-approve-prop-50\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a tit-for-tat nationwide redistricting battle<\/a> spurred by President Donald Trump, with control of Congress on the line in midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, at Trump\u2019s behest, Texas Republicans redid the state\u2019s congressional districts with an eye on gaining five seats.<\/p>\n<p>California Gov.
