I had always considered myself a happy, active person, but suddenly, I felt sad and lethargic with little motivation to exercise. The pandemic had just hit, I started an embroidery business, my children were attending school virtually, and my husband was working from home. I wasn\u2019t exercising and felt like I had no time to focus on myself. At my heaviest, I had gained over 50 pounds.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">I didn\u2019t recognize myself physically or mentally, so my doctor prescribed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a62842630\/testosterone-missing-piece-menopause\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a62842630\/testosterone-missing-piece-menopause\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hormone medication\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">hormone medication<\/a> to relieve my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a63164549\/perimenopause-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a63164549\/perimenopause-symptoms\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"perimenopause symptoms\" data-node-id=\"1.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">perimenopause symptoms<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a46629981\/why-am-i-always-hot\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a46629981\/why-am-i-always-hot\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hot flashes\" data-node-id=\"1.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">hot flashes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a19911836\/why-sweat-in-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a19911836\/why-sweat-in-sleep\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"night sweats\" data-node-id=\"1.7\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">night sweats<\/a>, and mood swings. Almost immediately after starting the meds, the dark cloud lifted, and I was motivated to revamp my lifestyle, so I began going to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a28008828\/what-is-crossfit\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a28008828\/what-is-crossfit\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"CrossFit\" data-node-id=\"1.9\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">CrossFit<\/a> classes five days a week. However, I pushed myself hard during every workout and the intensity of the classes caused me to overtrain, which led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a63865851\/msm-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a63865851\/msm-supplements\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"joint pain\" data-node-id=\"1.11\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">joint pain<\/a> and a shoulder injury. Plus, after a year of classes, I hadn\u2019t lost any weight, which made me feel discouraged.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">It wasn\u2019t until the spring of 2023, just after my 50th birthday, when I stumbled on a photo of influencer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thelykkeviking\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thelykkeviking\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Kiki Hurwitt\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Kiki Hurwitt<\/a> on Instagram. I was so inspired by her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a62670239\/women-over-60-transformations\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a62670239\/women-over-60-transformations\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"mid-life strength transformation\" data-node-id=\"3.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">mid-life strength transformation<\/a>, so I messaged her and asked for advice. Kiki frequently posted about the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a65237012\/strength-training-after-60-how-to-start\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a65237012\/strength-training-after-60-how-to-start\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength training\" data-node-id=\"3.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">strength training<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a19713960\/how-to-count-macros-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a19713960\/how-to-count-macros-for-weight-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"counting macros\" data-node-id=\"3.7\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">counting macros<\/a>, but I learned that her secret weapon was hiring a coach.  <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"5.0\">After interviewing many online personal trainers, I began working with my current coach on losing fat, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63981068\/how-to-grow-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63981068\/how-to-grow-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"building muscle\" data-node-id=\"5.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-node-id=\"5.1.0\">building muscle<\/strong><\/a><strong data-node-id=\"5.2\">, and training for longevity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">My coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gingerfit512\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gingerfit512\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Jennifer Perez\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Jennifer Perez<\/a> and I began virtually training five days a week, focusing on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63593179\/hybrid-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a63593179\/hybrid-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"mix of strength training and cardio\" data-node-id=\"6.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">mix of strength training and cardio<\/a> with an emphasis on proper form and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a60720121\/progressive-overload-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a60720121\/progressive-overload-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"progressive overload\" data-node-id=\"6.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">progressive overload<\/a> (gradually increasing the intensity, volume, or duration of workouts over time to build strength). I also learned about the importance of recovery and rest days. Instead of pushing my limits in every workout like I did in CrossFit, Jennifer taught me how to create a sustainable routine for long-term success. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">She also taught me to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a19713960\/how-to-count-macros-for-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/weight-loss\/a19713960\/how-to-count-macros-for-weight-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"count macros\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">count macros<\/a> to support my weight loss and muscle gains. This eating approach was helpful because I realized I could still eat my favorite foods when I paid attention to my portion sizes and macro ratios. At first, it was a little overwhelming, and took time to fully understand how to create a macro-based meal, but once my coach taught me how to read nutrition labels, it became second nature. I also learned to meal prep, which sets me up for success during the week. While I\u2019d tried a variety of diets and eating approaches throughout my life, counting macros was the only one that felt sustainable and satisfying.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">After a few weeks of consistency, I felt better than I could have ever imagined. The number on the scale was dropping, which was great, but for the first time in my life, I actually felt strong. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a43068167\/misconceptions-women-lifting-heavy-weights-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a43068167\/misconceptions-women-lifting-heavy-weights-essay\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Lifting heavy weights\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Lifting heavy weights<\/a> was empowering, and I was determined to keep putting in the work to become even stronger.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"10.0\">Now, at 52, I lift heavier weights than I used to and balance my training with rest days to give my body time to recover.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">Jennifer still programs my workouts, and my current goal is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a29514236\/what-is-hypertrophy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a29514236\/what-is-hypertrophy\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hypertrophy\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">hypertrophy<\/a>, or growing the size of my muscles. Over the past two years, I have been strength training three to five days per week, but now I train four days a week with two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g46316399\/best-upper-body-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g46316399\/best-upper-body-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"upper-body\" data-node-id=\"11.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">upper-body<\/a> and two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g39028922\/dumbbell-leg-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g39028922\/dumbbell-leg-workouts\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"lower-body\" data-node-id=\"11.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">lower-body<\/a> days, alternating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a60732566\/push-pull-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a60732566\/push-pull-workouts\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"push and pull exercises\" data-node-id=\"11.7\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">push and pull exercises<\/a>. On upper body push days, I focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g26871210\/best-chest-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g26871210\/best-chest-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"chest\" data-node-id=\"11.9\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">chest<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g28242946\/best-triceps-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g28242946\/best-triceps-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"triceps\" data-node-id=\"11.11\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">triceps<\/a>, while on upper body pull days, I focus on lats, delts, traps, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a24851851\/bicep-workouts-for-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a24851851\/bicep-workouts-for-women\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"biceps\" data-node-id=\"11.13\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">biceps<\/a>. I do five moves per session with three to four sets of 10 to 12 reps.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g28759770\/back-and-bicep-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/g28759770\/back-and-bicep-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Back\" data-node-id=\"12.0\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Back<\/a> is my favorite body part to train, so I love lat pull-downs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64242460\/ultimate-pull-up-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64242460\/ultimate-pull-up-plan\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"pull-ups\" data-node-id=\"12.2\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">pull-ups<\/a>. I also enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a20702206\/how-to-pushup\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a20702206\/how-to-pushup\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"push-ups\" data-node-id=\"12.4\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">push-ups<\/a>, even though they felt impossible at the start of my journey. Now, I can do 12 push-ups and recently crushed my first unassisted pull-up, which was really exciting.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-i9p093 emevuu60\">On top of strength training, I do 15 minutes of cardio three days a week.
