WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – The City of Wichita Falls has worked out a deal to transfer ownership of land used for the Streams and Valleys Mountain Biking Trail, securing its future for years to come. <\/p>\n
Streams and Valleys purchased the quarter-acre property at 1225 Scotland Drive from the city for $10. The land is used as part of the mountain biking trail system and is also included in the Hotter\u2019N Hell Hundred course. <\/p>\n
Officials with Streams and Valleys say the purchase marks one of the final major steps in moving sections of the trail out of private ownership and ensuring the land remains protected and accessible to the public well into the future. <\/p>\n
David Coleman, chairman of Streams and Valleys, said the agreement is an exciting moment in the trail\u2019s history. <\/p>\n
\u201cFor those of us who are in the know as to what the ownership of the property is, we\u2019re definitely excited about it and just thrilled that the city is such a great partner in making good things happen,\u201d Coleman said. <\/p>\n
While the land itself only cost the organization $10, Coleman explained the city\u2019s agreement also includes additional maintenance responsibilities for the organization. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll be picking up the trash all along that section under Central Freeway, and we\u2019re also going to mow that big vacant lot that\u2019s between the demolished hotel and the RV park,\u201d Coleman said. <\/p>\n
Coleman said the timing of the agreement is especially important as more cyclists turn to mountain biking for safety reasons. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve had some accidents with cars and cyclists on the roads, and so riding off-road is a much safer option. Our mountain bike trail is a blast,\u201d Coleman said. <\/p>\n
Following the land transfer, organization officials said the mountain biking trail is now owned mostly by Streams and Valleys, along with a couple of other nonprofit organizations. <\/p>\n
For now, Streams and Valleys officials said their focus remains on maintaining the trail and continuing to work with the city to keep it safe and welcoming for riders of all skill levels.<\/p>\n
