{"id":56729,"date":"2025-07-11T11:33:22","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T11:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/56729\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T11:33:22","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T11:33:22","slug":"peak-energy-demand-records-broken-as-phoenix-hit-118","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/56729\/","title":{"rendered":"Peak energy demand records broken as Phoenix hit 118"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX \u2013 The Valley\u2019s two primary electricity providers met record levels of peak energy demand on Wednesday, which was Phoenix\u2019s hottest day of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project both saw previously unseen customer demand during a day <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-weather-news\/daily-heat-record-hot-day\/5726639\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Phoenix\u2019s high temperature<\/a> was 118 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Citing preliminary data, APS said customers used 8,527 megawatts of power between 5 and 6 p.m. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, SRP said it delivered 8,324 megawatts to its customers between 3 and 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>One megawatt can power about 225 average homes, according to SRP.<\/p>\n<p>APS and SRP both set their <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-news\/arizona-utility-companies-set-records-for-energy-delivered-on-day-where-phoenix-hit-116-degrees\/5590044\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous peak energy demand record<\/a> on Aug. 4 of last year, when the high temperature in Phoenix was 116 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>How do APS and SRP keep up with increasing peak energy demand?<\/p>\n<p>APS said it invests more than $2 billion annually in electrical system upgrades, operations and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s record for peak energy demand has more than tripled since 1979 and is expected to reach more than 13,000 megawatts by 2038.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArizona is growing fast, and APS is building out the energy grid to keep pace. Our team monitors customer needs by the minute, plans decades ahead and covers everything in between,\u201d Brian Cole, APS vice president of resource management said in a press release Thursday, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aps.com\/en\/About\/Our-Company\/Newsroom\/Articles\/APS_Recognizes_Crews_Powering_Arizona_on_National_Lineworker_Appreciation_Day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Lineworker Appreciation Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom 24\/7 nuclear to flexible natural gas, coal, solar, wind, battery storage and our partnerships with customers \u2014 we\u2019re delivering reliable service with balanced resources at the lowest cost possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pam Syrjala, SRP senior director of supply and trading, said her company always plans ahead to meet peak energy demand during the summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe engaged our demand response program and leveraged a diverse mix of generation \u2014 including solar, battery storage and natural gas \u2014 to maintain reliability for our customers,\u201d Syrjala <a href=\"https:\/\/media.srpnet.com\/srp-customers-set-new-record-for-energy-demand-amid-extreme-heat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How many customers get power from APS and SRP?<\/p>\n<p>APS, which is owned by publicly traded Pinnacle West Capital Corp., serves about 1.4 million customers in 11 Arizona counties, making it the state\u2019s largest power provider. The utility\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aps.com\/-\/media\/APS\/APSCOM-PDFs\/Residential\/Service-Plans\/Service-Territory-Map\/APS_Service_Territory_Map_2017_FL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">service area<\/a> includes a portion of Phoenix along with Valley suburbs to the west and north.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/ktar.com\/arizona-business\/aps-rate-hike-2026\/5718128\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">APS filed an application<\/a> with the Arizona Corporation Commission to raise rates by 14%.
