{"id":56845,"date":"2025-07-11T12:36:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T12:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/56845\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T12:36:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T12:36:11","slug":"state-department-laying-off-1300-staffers-under-trump-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/56845\/","title":{"rendered":"State Department laying off 1,300 staffers under Trump plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) \u2014 The State Department is firing more than 1,300 employees on Friday in line with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/state-department-reorganization-rubio-trump-d1c4098578b16f31ab34d700766fe615\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a dramatic reorganization plan<\/a> unveiled by the Trump administration earlier this year, a move that critics say will damage America\u2019s global leadership and efforts to counter threats abroad.<\/p>\n<p>The department is <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/state-department-layoffs-trump-administration-rubio-6a74fb3eee36982deef261b4f9b8799d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sending layoff notices<\/a> to 1,107 civil servants and 246 foreign service officers with domestic assignments in the United States, said a senior State Department official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss personnel matters ahead of individual notices being emailed to affected employees. <\/p>\n<p>Foreign service officers affected will be placed immediately on administrative leave for 120 days, after which they will formally lose their jobs, according to an internal notice obtained by The Associated Press. For most affected civil servants, the separation period is 60 days, it said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn connection with the departmental reorganization \u2026 the department is streamlining domestic operations to focus on diplomatic priorities,\u201d the notice says. \u201cHeadcount reductions have been carefully tailored to affect non-core functions, duplicative or redundant offices, and offices where considerable efficiencies may be found from centralization or consolidation of functions and responsibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While lauded by <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a>, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and their Republican allies as overdue and necessary to make the department leaner, more nimble and more efficient, the cuts have been roundly criticized by current and former diplomats who say they will weaken U.S. influence and its ability to counter existing and emerging threats abroad.<\/p>\n<p>The layoffs are part of big changes to State Department work<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has pushed to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/international-students-visas-trump-guidance-social-media-a1f5180ce83560aff66dd65534906697\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reshape American diplomacy<\/a> and worked aggressively to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-elon-musk-federal-workers-layoffs-d295d4bb2cdd5023c27d9cb03754e81b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shrink the size of the federal government<\/a>, including mass dismissals as part of moves to dismantle whole departments like <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/usaid-trump-obama-cuts-famine-19e628eb360833f94bb64cd2479d7cb6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the U.S. Agency for International Development<\/a> and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-trump-education-layoffs-79a160b71db85aa060b11de58926a276\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Education Department<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>USAID, the six-decade-old foreign assistance agency, was <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/usaid-trump-obama-cuts-famine-19e628eb360833f94bb64cd2479d7cb6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">absorbed into the State Department<\/a> last week after the administration dramatically slashed foreign aid funding.<\/p>\n<p>A recent ruling by <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-trump-mass-firings-151e14da3186d34eab1923c45831c1b6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Supreme Court cleared the way<\/a> for the layoffs to start, while lawsuits challenging the legality of the cuts continue to play out. The department had formally advised staffers on Thursday that it would be sending layoff notices to some of them soon. The job cuts are large but considerably less than many had feared.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio said officials took \u201ca very deliberate step to reorganize the State Department to be more efficient and more focused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a consequence of trying to get rid of people. But if you close the bureau, you don\u2019t need those positions,\u201d he told reporters Thursday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he\u2019s attending the annual <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/association-of-southeast-asian-nations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Association of Southeast Asian Nations<\/a> Regional Forum. \u201cUnderstand that some of these are positions that are being eliminated, not people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said some of the cuts will be unfilled positions or those that are about to be vacant because an employee took an early retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Critics say the changes will hurt US standing abroad<\/p>\n<p>The American Academy of Diplomacy, an association that includes hundreds of former senior diplomats, said the State Department layoffs \u201cwill seriously undermine the ability of our government to understand, explain, and respond to a complex and increasingly contested world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when the United States faces unprecedented challenges from strategic competitors and adversaries, ongoing conflicts in Central Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and emerging security threats, the decision to gut the Department of State\u2019s institutional knowledge and operational capacity is an act of vandalism,\u201d the organization said in a statement last week before the cuts were announced.<\/p>\n<p>It added that Rubio\u2019s explanations for the cuts are \u201cdisingenuous, pernicious, and false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael Rigas, the department\u2019s deputy secretary for management and resources, said in a notice Thursday that staffers would be informed \u201csoon\u201d if they were being laid off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst and foremost, we want to thank them for their dedication and service to the United States,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce notifications have taken place, the Department will enter the final stage of its reorganization and focus its attention on delivering results-driven diplomacy,\u201d Rigas added.<\/p>\n<p>The State Department is undergoing a big reorganization<\/p>\n<p>In late May, the State Department notified Congress of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/state-department-reorganization-rubio-trump-d1c4098578b16f31ab34d700766fe615\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an updated reorganization plan<\/a>, proposing cuts to programs beyond what <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/state-department-rubio-reorganization-trump-usaid-3fc186fefddaaa72c3040db9fb380af4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">had been revealed earlier by Rubio<\/a> and an 18% reduction of staff in the U.S., even higher than the 15% initially floated in April.<\/p>\n<p>The restructuring has been driven in part by the need to find a new home for the remaining functions of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/doge-usaid-elon-musk-e56588069f7610ef13f844293d058ccb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">USAID<\/a>, which was an early target of the Trump administration and then-aide <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/doge-musk-trump-ai-starlink-gsa-efficiency-d67a41d1be98db11f05ca8e4472f53bd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk\u2019s<\/a> Department of Government Efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>The State Department is planning to eliminate some divisions tasked with oversight of America\u2019s two-decade involvement in Afghanistan, including an office focused on resettling Afghan nationals who worked alongside the U.S. military.<\/p>\n<p>A letter that the department had sent to Congress noted that the reorganization will affect more than 300 bureaus and offices, saying it is eliminating divisions it describes as doing unclear or overlapping work.
