{"id":568684,"date":"2026-02-05T18:34:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T18:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/568684\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T18:34:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T18:34:09","slug":"man-charged-with-terrorism-for-bomb-at-indigenous-protest-in-australia-indigenous-rights-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/568684\/","title":{"rendered":"Man charged with \u2018terrorism\u2019 for bomb at Indigenous protest in Australia | Indigenous Rights News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">The charge marks the first instance of an individual being prosecuted for this specific offence in Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Australian authorities have declared an attempted bombing at an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2026\/1\/26\/video-thousands-of-protesters-march-on-australias-invasion-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Indigenous rights rally<\/a> in Perth last month \u201can act of terror\u201d, charging a 31-year-old man with one of the most serious offences in the Commonwealth Criminal Code.<\/p>\n<p>The Western Australia Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT) said in a press statement on Thursday that the man removed a \u201chome-made improvised explosive device\u201d from his bag and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/29\/police-probe-explosive-device-thrown-at-indigenous-protest-in-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threw<\/a> it into a crowd at a rally in Perth\u2019s Central Business District on January 26.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">The device failed to detonate, and no casualties were reported among the several thousand people who attended the rally, held in support of First Nations people. The event was part of a series of nationwide \u201cInvasion Day\u201d protests organised to advocate for Indigenous rights and to protest against the historical dispossession of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.<\/p>\n<p>If found guilty, the man could face life imprisonment under the country\u2019s law.<\/p>\n<p>The police said the man will remain in custody until his next court appearance, set for February 17 at the Perth Magistrates Court.<\/p>\n<p>Western Australia Premier Roger Cook, speaking at a news conference on Thursday, urged people to condemn such incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis charge \u2026 alleges the attack on Aboriginal people and other peaceful protesters was motivated by hateful, racist ideology,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is the first time this charge has been laid in Western Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018An attack on all Australians\u2019<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy condemned the incident, characterising the attempted bombing as an assault on Australian social cohesion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Albanese Government condemns this sickening and abhorrent incident,\u201d she said in a Senate statement, Indigenous News Australia reported. \u201cAn attack on First Nations Australians is an attack on all Australians. First Nations Australians, like all Australians, must be able to gather peacefully without fearing for our safety. There is no place for hate, intimidation or racism of any form in Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The JCTT said in its statement that to secure a \u201cterrorism\u201d conviction under the criminal code, authorities must prove three specific legal components.<\/p>\n<p>First, the action must cause or threaten serious consequences, such as harm to human life, damage to property, or a significant risk to public safety. Second, the act must be motivated by the intention to advance a political, religious, or ideological cause. Finally, the action must be intended to coerce a government or intimidate the public, or a specific section of the population.<\/p>\n<p>The targeting of the rally occurred as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to face recorded inequalities in healthcare, education, and imprisonment rates, as well as a history of being targeted by racially motivated crimes in Australia.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"0\">In December 2022, Australian authorities were forced to confront what experts described as \u201cdeeply entrenched\u201d racism following the alleged murder of 15-year-old Indigenous boy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/5\/8\/two-found-guilty-of-murdering-indigenous-teen-cassius-turvey-in-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cassius Turvey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1\">Cassius, a member of the Noongar Nation in Western Australia, was walking home from school with friends when he was subjected to an unprovoked assault with a metal pole.
