KILLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – An unusual sight is attracting the eye of many in the popular Vermont ski town as a young moose has been hanging around a busy area in Killington.<\/p>\n
A two-year-old bull moose dubbed \u201cMogul\u201d by the community has taken up residence just off Route 4 for the past few weeks, drawing locals and tourists.<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw him two times last week because I drive by here a couple times a week, and any chance to see any of our beautiful wildlife in the natural is a special occasion,\u201d said Buffy Bell of West Windsor.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnybody who knows me knows that moose are my absolute favorite animals. Come in my house, you\u2019ll see I have moose decor all over the place, and this is just a dream,\u201d said Deirdre Miller of Fair Haven.<\/p>\n
Vermont Fish and Wildlife officials are also keeping a close eye on the ungulate.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re concerned about the health of the moose and why he\u2019s acting weird. And then we\u2019re also concerned about the safety of the public,\u201d said the department\u2019s Nick Fortin. He said it\u2019s uncommon to see a moose in this area, and it\u2019s odd he\u2019s this close to the major highway. \u201cSometimes when moose localize like this, especially when it\u2019s around people and they don\u2019t seem to have a normal fear of people. Sometimes it\u2019s an early sign of disease.\u201d <\/p>\n
Experts urge people to observe from inside their cars from a distance and do not approach.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have personally seen some people being very stupid and approaching the moose off the road, which is just a terrible, terrible idea, and no one should ever do that,\u201d Fortin said.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s advice this moose-lover is taking to heart. \u201cThere are worries because you have people that can block traffic, you have people that want to go out and disturb him, and just leave him alone, let him do what he is doing,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n
Wildlife officials will continue to monitor Mogul through the winter.<\/p>\n
