The milestone marked a 9% year-over-year increase for NBC in the key demographic, while ABC saw an 8% decline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NBC\u2019s recent transition from Lester Holt to Tom Llamas (above) as anchor of \u201cNightly News\u201d appears to be paying dividends in the ratings. Los Angeles Times via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>NBC also captured the 18-49 demo on both Monday and Tuesday this week, bringing in 677,000 and 624,000 viewers, respectively. ABC trailed with 668,000 on Monday and 575,000 on Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/nbc-nightly-news-tom-llamas-beats-abc-key-demo-ratings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Wrap.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite NBC\u2019s demo wins, ABC remains the dominant network when it comes to total viewership. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, \u201cWorld News Tonight\u201d averaged 7.09 million viewers, compared to 5.81 million for \u201cNBC Nightly News.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, the reality is Muir just had the biggest win over NBC in 30 years in June with Llamas as anchor,\u201d a source with knowledge of the situation told The Post. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took a month and a half for NBC to get a night in the demo, something Lester Holt occasionally used to do, too \u2014 but Holt didn\u2019t try to get headlines for it. It\u2019s silly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since Llamas took over on June 2, NBC \u201cNightly News\u201d outperformed ABC \u201cWorld News Tonight\u201d (anchored by David Muir, above) in the 25-54 age demographic on Tuesday, according to Nielsen data. ABC<\/p>\n<p>The source added that with Muir reporting on the scene from Texas on Monday, \u201cWorld News Tonight\u201d beat out Llamas by nearly 2 million viewers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nights with major news are really the most telling,\u201d the source added.<\/p>\n<p>Bringing up the rear with 3.875 million viewers was \u201cCBS Evening News,\u201d\u00a0which has been panned for an overhaul that included dumping longtime anchor Norah O\u2019Donnell for lesser-known, and less expensive, co-anchors John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois.<\/p>\n<p>In June, ABC averaged 7.31 million total viewers \u2014 its biggest monthly win in three decades \u2014 while NBC averaged 5.67 million. ABC\u2019s overall ratings were up 1% year-over-year, while NBC\u2019s total viewership increased 0.4%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the key 25-54 demographic, \u201cWorld News Tonight\u201d drew 991,000 viewers in June, outpacing \u201cNBC \u201cNightly News\u201d (823,000). Among adults 18-49, ABC averaged 669,000, while NBC drew 538,000.<\/p>\n<p>Llamas, 46, was named Holt\u2019s successor in March after Holt (above) announced in February that he would step away from his nightly duties to focus full-time on \u201cDateline NBC.\u201d \u00a0 AP<\/p>\n<p>The performance represents the closest June demo gap between NBC and ABC in five years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CBS came in third across all categories in June, with 3.94 million total viewers, 524,000 in adults 25-54 and 369,000 in adults 18-49.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Tiffany Network, whose news division has been rocked by turmoil in the wake of parent company Paramount Global\u2019s controversial $16 million settlement of a lawsuit filed by President Trump, has struggled to pin down a winning formula for its nightly newscast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCBS Evening News\u201d saw a 10% year-over-year decline in total viewership in June.<\/p>\n<p>The Post has sought comment from NBC and CBS.\u00a0An ABC spokesperson declined to respond.<\/p>\n<p>Llamas <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/30\/media\/lester-holt-signs-off-as-nbc-nightly-news-anchor-after-a-decade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was named Holt\u2019s successor in March<\/a> after Holt announced he would step away from his nightly duties to focus full-time on \u201cDateline NBC.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, The Post reported that Tiffany Network honchos scrapped a planned overhaul of the \u201cEvening News\u201d format following the departure of longtime anchor Norah O\u2019Donnell.\u00a0 AP<\/p>\n<p>Holt had served as anchor of \u201cNightly News\u201d for a decade and held a trusted place among American audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Tapping Llamas was part of NBC\u2019s broader strategy to attract younger and more diverse viewers while maintaining a reputation for journalistic credibility. He continues to anchor \u201cTop Story,\u201d a news program that streams on NBC News Now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Llamas, who is of Cuban descent, began his journalism career as a teenager and has worked at both NBC and ABC in a variety of roles, including correspondent and anchor.
