Curling began Wednesday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/06\/olympics-us-figure-skating-team-competition\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Figure Skating team<\/a> led after the first day of competition, and controversy is stirring around ski jumpers reportedly seeking a leg up when it comes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/06\/olympics-ski-jumping-rumor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sizing of their ski suits.<\/a>\u00a0Plus, several athletes from the Chicago area are participating in the Games, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/03\/ski-jumper-lake-county-olympics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lake County ski jumper<\/a>, a four-time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/10\/olympics-oak-park-speedskater-emery-lehman\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Olympic speedskater<\/a> from Oak Park, a Palos Heights native representing Team USA in women\u2019s hockey and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/05\/teuvo-teravainen-kendall-coyne-schofield-olympics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blackhawks forward<\/a> playing for\u00a0defending Olympic champion Finland.<\/p>\n<p>Back in Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson and his team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/04\/mayor-brandon-johnson-budget-opponent-fight-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revisited the city\u2019s budget,<\/a> claiming it\u2019s still short $163 million at a South Side town hall on Tuesday. Johnson\u2019s team shared their issues with the spending plan and signaled that it may need to be amended mid-year. The mayor also appeared to reverse course on an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/31\/mayor-brandon-johnson-directs-police-to-investigate-federal-immigration-agents-for-possible-felony-charges\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">executive order<\/a> signed at the end of last week that directed police to investigate immigration agents, saying the decision to prosecute ICE and Border Patrol would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/03\/mayor-brandon-johnson-says-up-to-cook-county-states-attorney-to-prosecute-federal-agents\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">left to the Cook County state\u2019s attorney.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With less than 40 days until Election Day, Illinois\u2019 primary races are heating up: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/02\/illinois-congressional-fundraising-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Millions of dollars<\/a> have been raised by the candidates running for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/29\/illinois-house-top-candidates-2nd-7th-8th-9th\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">five open congressional seats,<\/a> the Democratic hopefuls for U.S. Senate duked it out in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/06\/illinois-senate-radio-debate-0206\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">yet another debate,<\/a> and a candidate for Illinois comptroller is facing scrutiny for putting campaign funds into a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/05\/how-a-campaign-contribution-loss-in-chkn-tokens-has-made-crypto-an-issue-in-the-illinois-comptroller-race\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cryptocurrency token<\/a>. Yet, on Sunday, a Justice Department official downplayed the likelihood of any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/01\/justice-department-official-epstein-files-revelations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">additional criminal charges.<\/a> Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/02\/clintons-house-epstein-investigation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreed to testify<\/a> in a U.S. House investigation into Epstein.<\/p>\n<p>In other news, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/05\/trial-set-broadview-six\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">May trial date<\/a> was set for the \u201cBroadview Six,\u201d Marimar Martinez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/03\/border-patrol-bodycam-video-marimar-martinez\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">testified in Washington<\/a> on the actions of immigration agents and a 17-year-old was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/05\/boy-17-charged-in-loop-mass-shooting-following-christmas-tree-lighting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">charged in the mass shooting<\/a> outside the Chicago Theatre last November. Education Secretary Linda McMahon, meanwhile, was in town this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/05\/education-secretary-linda-mcmahon-visits-chicago\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">visiting a private Christian high school<\/a> on the Near West Side as part of a national tour celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/05\/chicago-bulls-nba-trade-tracker\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NBA trade deadline<\/a> was Thursday, and the Chicago Bulls front office was a flurry of action. The night\u2019s top winners were Billie Eilish, who took home song of the year for \u201cWildflower,\u201d Kendrick Lamar and SZA, who won record of the year for their collaboration \u201cLuther,\u201d and Bad Bunny, who bagged the Recording Academy\u2019s top prize for his album <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/31\/bad-bunny-wins-album-of-the-year-at-the-2026-grammy-awards-a-first-for-a-spanish-language-album\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cDeb\u00ed Tirar M\u00e1s Fotos\u201d<\/a> and made history with the first Spanish-language record to win album of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Bad Bunny\u2019s history-making streak will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/03\/super-bowl-bad-bunny-ice-donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continue this weekend.<\/a> The Puerto Rican singer will headline the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/06\/bad-bunnys-super-bowl-halftime-show\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Super Bowl halftime show<\/a> on Sunday \u2014 becoming the first Latin solo artist to do so.
