{"id":57463,"date":"2025-07-11T17:58:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T17:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/57463\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T17:58:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T17:58:13","slug":"plague-confirmed-as-cause-of-death-for-arizona-resident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/57463\/","title":{"rendered":"Plague confirmed as cause of death for Arizona resident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX \u2013 A northern Arizona resident recently died from pneumonic plague, officials announced Friday.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first confirmed death from the severe lung infection in Coconino County since 2007, according to Coconino County Health and Human Services (CCHHS).<\/p>\n<p>The patient died after going to the Flagstaff Medical Center Emergency Department, which is run by Northern Arizona Healthcare (NAH).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite appropriate initial management and attempts to provide life-saving resuscitation, the patient did not recover and died in the emergency department the same day. The NAH team is saddened by this loss of a community member,\u201d NAH said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>State and local health authorities are collaborating on the case.<\/p>\n<p>What is plague and how does it spread?<\/p>\n<p>Plague is generally is seen in three forms \u2013 pneumonic, bubonic and septicemic \u2014 but is rare in humans. <\/p>\n<p>Most cases are of the bubonic variety, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/plague\/maps-statistics\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. Pneumonic is the most serious form and the only type that can be transmitted between humans.<\/p>\n<p>An average of seven plague cases are reported in the U.S. annually, most in rural areas of northern New Mexico and Arizona, the CDC said.<\/p>\n<p>The disease is caused by a bacterium called Yersinia pestis.
