{"id":57489,"date":"2025-07-11T18:12:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T18:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/57489\/"},"modified":"2025-07-11T18:12:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T18:12:12","slug":"unesco-approves-world-heritage-listing-for-was-murujuga-rock-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/57489\/","title":{"rendered":"UNESCO approves world heritage listing for WA&#8217;s Murujuga rock art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">UNESCO has granted World Heritage status to the Murujuga Cultural Landscape \u2014 an area of ancient aboriginal rock art in Western Australia that is older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Giza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris, UNESCO member states unanimously voted to inscribe the Murujuga rock art on the World Heritage List.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Murujuga in the Pilbara region in WA\u2019s north-west, has more than one million petroglyphs some dating back 50,000 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is also home to the world\u2019s oldest depiction of a human face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-09-01\/traditional-owners-murujuga-national-park-unesco-heritage-list\/102801074\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In 2023, the Australian Government nominated the landscape for World Heritage Status<\/a>, following decades of campaigning from indigenous groups for international recognition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Traditional custodians from the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation and the Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt were in Paris for the decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They successfully campaigned for member states to go against a draft decision from advisors to the UN in May, which recommended the world heritage bid be referred back to Australia.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"UNESCO Stills-8\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/911af2265b00ea8a16ea5ea383eb1fe5\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Belinda Churnside, one of the MAC board directors, at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. (ABC: Adrian Wilson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The recommendation raised concerns the rock art was being impacted by emissions from Woodside\u2019s nearby gas project, which has been granted a 40-year extension by the federal government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An amendment was moved by UNESCO member states on Friday for Australia to continue the ongoing research and ongoing monitoring on the impact of the industries on the petroglyphs and on the property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Other traditional owners who travelled to Paris for the session had been pushing for more protections for the Murujuga site, including for<a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-28\/climate-advocates-left-devastated-by-north-west-shef-approval\/105349108\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> the expansion of nearby industry to be stopped.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Close up of a collection of jagged red rocks. (ABC News: Charlie Mclean)<\/p>\n<p>What is Murujuga?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Murujuga Cultural Landscape is home to some of the planet&#8217;s oldest known rock art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is an area of ancient rocks in north west WA, that includes the Burrup Peninsula and 42 islands on the Dampier archipelago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">More than a million petroglyphs depict stories and cultural practices for more than 50,000 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-06\/unesco-world-heritage-murujuga-rock-art-meaning\/105453930\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The meaning behind Murujuga&#8217;s petroglyphs<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ahead of UNESCO releasing its final assessment of the area&#8217;s world-heritage potential, the Burrup&#8217;s traditional owners tell the stories behind the landmark rock art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For the Ngarda-Ngarli \u2014 the five language groups that are custodians of Murujuga \u2014 and Aboriginal people across the Pilbara, the rock art is the work of the creation spirits and a permanent reminder of the natural order of Lore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The nominated area, spanning almost 100 thousand hectares, is also home to major gas and fertiliser plants which have been a source of contention in the lead-up to the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Early warnings from UNESCO<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">An advisory body to UNESCO<a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-28\/unesco-murujuga-world-heritage-list-call\/105347012\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> referred the nomination for World Heritage Status back to the Federal Government<\/a> in a draft decision in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) found the state of the site&#8217;s conservation is under &#8220;major threat&#8221; due to the nearby presence of polluting industries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;ICOMOS considers that the state of conservation is extremely vulnerable to industrial pollution&#8221;, the report said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A rock carving in\u00a0Murujuga, Western Australia, shows a kangaroo, on red rock.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/f480f0072e1a98a2c014e8355444c0f8\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Murujuga is home to millions of rock carvings. (ABC News:\u00a0Brendan Esposito)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While ICOMOS found the nomination had met the criteria for world heritage status, it urged the government to ensure the total removal of degrading acidic emissions and the prevention of further development of industrial developments in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In response, the government said that recommendation was influenced by &#8220;factual inaccuracies&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Watt has lobbied to ambassadors from member countries to rally support to move an amendment during the meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the time, Mr Hicks had said MAC was &#8220;deeply disappointed&#8221; with the draft decision and set to work on recommendations from the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Now, he said he MAC is &#8220;elated&#8221; with UNESCO&#8217;s decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Peter Hicks, chair of the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation (MAC), said: \u00a0\u201cWe are elated to see the Murujuga Cultural Landscape recognised for its Outstanding Universal Value,\u201d said Mr Peter Hicks, Chair Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation (MAC).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u201cThroughout this Indigenous-led process, we have ensured the nomination reflected those aspirations for our Ngurra.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u201cFurther, we have enjoyed the support of and worked in partnership with both the Western Australian and Federal Governments and we thank them for their efforts, respect and for undertaking their roles in this process without undermining Indigenous decision making.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u00a0\u201cWhile today\u2019s inscription is recognition of the hard work that MAC has put in to progressing this nomination over the past two years, more importantly, it is recognition of the way our ancestors have managed this extraordinary Landscape for over 50,000 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u201cWe are proud to continue that legacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u201cWorld Heritage is the mechanism we will use to continue to do what we have always done \u2013 protect our culture for all future generations.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rock art at Murujuga, showing a turtle.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/09c65e58389909c52d65ee2b7662ef68\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Rock art at Murujuga, showing a turtle. (ABC News: Brendan Esposito)<\/p>\n<p>Can Murujuga exist alongside industry?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Several campaigns have been taking place for the Murujuga site to be put on the World Heritage list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But there was disagreement on exactly what that should look like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Pilbara traditional owner and Mardudhunera woman Raelene Cooper was also in Paris for the decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She is a former chair of MAC and founded the Save Our Songlines group, which has launched a legal bid to halt the federal government&#8217;s decision to extend Woodside&#8217;s North West Shelf gas project, to protect the Murujuga site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While the Federal Government and MAC were lobbying for World Heritage status regardless of heavy industry nearby, Save Our Songlines does not believe the rock art can exist while gas plants are operating nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Reacting to the site being granted World Heritage status, she said: \u201cMy family and community have worked for many years for World Heritage protection for Murujuga\u2019s ancient rock art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u201cThis is a momentous day for our old people and our future generations, to have Murujuga\u2019s outstanding universal heritage values recognised by the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u201cOur rock art tells the stories of our people, and maintains our songlines and bloodline connection to our ngurra.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Aerial photo showing green spinifex creeping up deep red rocks with ocean in the background\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/a4803029e4f02e2022a662f4c95ebb20\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Murujuga rock art petroglyphs sit on the Burrup Peninsula and islands off the Dampier Archipelago.\u00a0 (ABC Pilbara: Alistair Bates)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u201cToday, Australia rewrote the World Heritage listing in the interests of the gas industry.\u00a0Even though all the recommended protections were removed after concerted lobbying from the Australian government, we are still overjoyed to see Murujuga finally World Heritage listed by UNESCO.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u201cMeanwhile, fertiliser plants are still being built around our sacred sites and polluting gas plants will emit toxic acid on our rock art for another 50 years.\u00a0The final decision today falls well short of the protections that expert body ICOMOS has recommended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But comments from World Heritage Committee members today send a clear signal to the Australian Government and Woodside that things need to change to prevent the ongoing desecration of Murujuga by polluting industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Global scrutiny will now be applied to what is happening at Murujuga.
