\n\tSince its 2021 premiere, Hacks<\/a> has been a major awards and critical darling, if not ratings giant, due to its sharp writing, superb performances and industry skewering. So it\u2019s no surprise that no one \u2014 not the least of which co-creators Lucia Aniello<\/a> and Paul W. Downs<\/a> \u2014 want the series to end. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhen asked by Deadline at tonight\u2019s DGA Awards carpet if Season 5, which will bow on HBO Max<\/a> sometime this year, is truly its curtain call, Downs responded: \u201cNobody wants it to be, I\u2019ll tell you that, including [lead] Jean Smart. A lot of people are making it hard to be the final season. We cannot confirm or deny at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile the Broad City alums (who conceived the show alongside Jen Statsky) were reticent to share plot details, Downs teased that \u201ca lot of things are full-circle\u201d as Deborah (Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) head back to Las Vegas for what seems poised to be a triumphant comedic comeback.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe pitched this show initially with the last scene in the pitch,\u201d Aniello explained. \u201cLike, \u2018It\u2019s five seasons, this is what the last scene is.\u2019 It is still the same, so for us, it\u2019s something we\u2019ve been building toward for a long time, so I really do hope people find the end of the season as satisfying as we do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDowns added that the only element of their ideation that\u2019s changed is the \u201crunway\u201d allotted for the show to reach its conclusion by \u201cstretching\u201d the storyline. \u201cFive and a half at least?\u201d he quipped about the number of seasons.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Emmy-winning couple also joked about having written a feature-length conclusion to Ava and Deborah\u2019s stories, saying they brought along a preliminary script to the DGA Awards to get feedback. Taking a page out of the Community playbook, Downs and Aniello joked about doing \u201cfive seasons and a movie\u201d and drew parallels to Sex and the City\u2018s finale movies, with the former adding they would be \u201copen to\u201d such a plan as \u201cwe love living with these characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHBO Max renewed Hacks for a fifth season<\/a> ahead of the series\u2019 Season 4 conclusion, after which executive producers and co-showrunners Aniello\u00a0and Downs inked a new overall deal<\/a> with\u00a0Warner Bros. Television<\/a>\u00a0and the streamer. <\/p>\n

\n\tLast year, Einbinder hinted that the show would come to an end with Season 5<\/a>, saying, \u201cPaul, Jen and Lucia are the true arbiters of that being true, ultimately, but I think the original plan was that they saw a five-season arc in their initial pitch for the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHBO chief Casey Bloys echoed that sentiment, telling Deadline in a recent interview<\/a> that \u201cit certainly seems that way [that Hacks is concluding with Season 5], but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat is known for a fact is that Hacks will pick up with Deborah reclaiming her legacy after being blamed for killing late-night.
