It was the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/buck-moon-farthest-full-moon-from-sun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:farthest full moon;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">farthest full moon<\/a> from the sun in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The name \u201cbuck moon\u201d is in reference to male deer, or bucks, which start to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/life\/wild-georgia-july-is-time-for-antlers-and-the-buck-moon\/G3CVQ74L7JDPTCOZ6MZLLYLKLA\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:rapidly grow their antlers;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">rapidly grow their antlers<\/a> this time of year. This year\u2019s buck moon reached its <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.almanac.com\/content\/full-moon-july\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:peak illumination;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">peak illumination<\/a> at 4:37 p.m. ET on Thursday, which is when it was fully visible and low on the horizon for stargazers in North America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This full moon was so visibly low on the horizon because of the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/the-summer-solstice-is-today-heres-what-to-expect-on-the-1st-day-of-summer-145338253.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:summer solstice;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">summer solstice<\/a>, which kicks off the summer and marks when the sun starts traveling at its highest point in the day. When the sun is at its high peak, the moon travels along a lower path throughout the night, according to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/july-full-moon-2025-rises-this-week-heres-what-to-expect-from-the-buck-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Space.com;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Space.com<\/a>. Due to its low position in the sky, buck moons tend to look <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/july-full-moon-2025-rises-this-week-heres-what-to-expect-from-the-buck-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a little orange because of Rayleigh scattering;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a little orange because of Rayleigh scattering<\/a>, which is the same thick atmosphere that makes us see sunsets as very orange.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A full moon happens when the sun, Earth and moon are in alignment and form a straight line. Since the moon and the sun are on either side of Earth, the sun\u2019s light shines on the moon entirely, making it look fully illuminated from the Earth\u2019s perspective, according to the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmersalmanac.com\/full-moon-dates-and-times\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Farmers\u2019 Almanac;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Farmers\u2019 Almanac<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Even if you missed the buck moon on July 10, the full moon will still be clearly visible over the next few nights, according to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/july-2025-full-buck-moon-dazzles-skywatchers-worldwide-photos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Space.com;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Space.com<\/a>.
