NEW YORK — On Monday morning, the Trump administration asked a federal court for a stay of Friday night’s Gateway Tunnel temporary restraining order<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unless the order is stayed by 1 p.m. Monday, the order requires the government to disburse up to $200 million for the project.<\/p>\n

The Gateway Tunnel Commission has said access to federal funding would allow work to quickly restart and get workers back on on the job.<\/p>\n

It comes as a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to restore funding for the new rail tunnel between New York and New Jersey on Friday.<\/p>\n

Friday’s decision came as construction was about to stop due to a funding freeze.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration had halted $16 billion for the project, citing concerns about unconstitutional spending.<\/p>\n

U.S. District Judge Jeannette A. Vargas approved a temporary restraining order to keep the funds flowing while the case plays out in court.<\/p>\n

The project aims to ease strain on an over 110-year-old tunnel connecting the two states, crucial for Amtrak and commuter trains.<\/p>\n
