A massive four-alarm fire tore through a Queens home Monday, killing a woman and injuring eight others, including a young man left fighting for his life, according to local authorities. <\/p>\n
The raging inferno broke out around 6:44 p.m. on the first floor of a residential building on Dongan Avenue between Poyer Street and Broadway in Elmhurst, according to the FDNY.<\/p>\n
A 34-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the blaze and a 22-year-old man was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition, police said. <\/p>\n

Five other New Yorkers and two firefighters suffered minor injuries, according to police and fire officials. <\/p>\n
Firefighters\u2019 battle to quell the flames continued into Monday evening, with photos showing towering orange flames consuming the building and powerlines and spreading smoke to neighboring homes.<\/p>\n
Multiple people were also spotted being taken into ambulances on stretchers as the blaze raged on. <\/p>\n
Neighbor Subash Gurung told The Post he was at work when his family panicked and called him because the fire broke out next to his house and smoke began flooding their basement.<\/p>\n
Nine people were injured, including one critically, during the house fire. Peter Gerber<\/p>\n
\u201cMy mother saw the smoke coming from the basement, and she screamed. And that\u2019s when all the people gathered, and they called 911,\u201d Gurung said.<\/p>\n
\u201cA cold night, it\u2019s terrible, and my apartment is filled with smoke. And they\u2019re telling us they\u2019re just going to tear down everything, and I think they\u2019re going to look into my apartment,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n
\u201cSo I don\u2019t have nowhere to go, I\u2019m relying on my friend tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nearby resident Caitlin Clarke also recalled smelling smoke and looking outside to see flames engulf the home on her street. <\/p>\n
\u201cI was watching a show with my mom, I was opening a fruit, and then I\u2019m like, \u2018Mom, do you smell that smoke?’\u201d Clarke said.<\/p>\n
Massive orange flames consumed the building and touched neighboring homes and powerlines, sending smoke cascading down the street. Peter Gerber<\/p>\n
\u201cI stand up and run to the door, and then there\u2019s smoke at the end of the block with flames coming out of it,\u201d Clarke recalled. <\/p>\n
\u201cI haven\u2019t seen anything like this in a long time. This is like something I would see in my history book,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s not immediately clear what caused the fire.
