{"id":579177,"date":"2026-02-10T06:02:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T06:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/579177\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T06:02:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T06:02:18","slug":"huon-aquaculture-confirms-antibiotic-use-in-salmon-hatchery-on-river-derwent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/579177\/","title":{"rendered":"Huon Aquaculture confirms antibiotic use in salmon hatchery on River Derwent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are calls for the public to be made aware of antibiotic use in Tasmania&#8217;s freshwater hatcheries after Huon Aquaculture recently used oxytetracycline to treat diseased salmon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are no disclosure requirements regarding the use of antibiotics in freshwater facilities, despite more stringent rules applying to the antibiotic florfenicol in coastal marine fish farms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Details of Huon Aquaculture&#8217;s use of antibiotics at its Meadowbank hatchery on the River Derwent were only made public after a <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/tasmanianinquirer.com.au\/news\/salmon-company-confirms-use-of-antibiotic-at-hatchery-in-hobarts-water-catchment\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report by the Tasmanian Inquirer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Tuesday, Huon Aquaculture <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/hobart-mornings\/huon-salmon-meadowbank-antibiotics-meg-webb\/106325624\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/audiosegment\/106325624\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told ABC Mornings<\/a> it deployed antibiotics as a &#8220;last line of defence&#8221; after an increase in mortality at the hatchery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The issue was caused by an intestinal infection, rather than the bacterial disease that led to a mass die-off event in coastal waterways in the state&#8217;s south-east last summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Back in mid-January, we saw a spike in water temperature,&#8221; the company&#8217;s general manager of aquaculture, Depha Miedecke, said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Things got quite warm and subsequently we saw an increase in mortality and this was caused by intestinal bacterial infection that can sometimes affect salmon and other fish.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Miedecke said the medication was given to two cohorts of fish over a 20-day period under veterinary advice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Meadowbank hatchery is about 20 kilometres upstream from TasWater&#8217;s Bryn Estyn water treatment plant, which is the primary source of drinking water for Greater Hobart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The township of New Norfolk is several kilometres further along the River Derwent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bryn Estyn water treatment plant near New Norfolk\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/5820298c287d83a7dc8bf64e95b4d2aa.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The antibiotics were used about 40 kilometres upstream from the Bryn Estyn water treatment plant. (ABC News: Tony King)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While downstream users were not notified, Ms Miedecke said the company chose to be &#8220;proactive&#8221; and &#8220;transparent&#8221; by making a voluntary disclosure to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The use of antibiotics in freshwater is very rare, so it&#8217;s certainly not something we do regularly at all,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We, in this case, decided to voluntarily speak with the EPA about it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement, the EPA said antibiotic residue monitoring had been put in place following the disclosure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The use of antibiotics at Meadowbank Hatchery was self-reported by Huon Aquaculture, noting there is no current regulatory requirement to do so,&#8221; the statement reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Accordingly, the EPA has put appropriate environmental conditions in place, including antibiotic residue monitoring at Meadowbank Hatchery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;These regulatory requirements will apply across all freshwater hatcheries across the state, strengthening the EPA&#8217;s regulatory framework.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Consistent with EPA practice, monitoring results will be published on the EPA website.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>MLC criticises &#8216;murky lack of transparency&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Oxytetracycline is commonly used to treat diseases in agricultural and aquacultural settings, as well as for human health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The World Health Organisation has categorised it as a <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.who.int\/media\/docs\/default-source\/gcp\/who-mia-list-2024-lv.pdf\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;highly important antimicrobial&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the WHO also notes that &#8220;antimicrobial resistance&#8221;, caused by their &#8220;misuse and overuse&#8221;, is &#8220;one of the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/antimicrobial-resistance\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">top global public health and development threats&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A lady with dark hair, blazer and glasses, sitting in a dark room, smiling at the camera.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/b111cb23bd50aa689683a9b1f7c68f42.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Meg Webb says there is a &#8220;murky lack of transparency&#8221; surrounding the use of antibiotics in salmon farms. in place for florfenicol<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Oxytetracycline was used during the mass mortality event in coastal salmon pens early last year, but Huon Aquaculture had complained it had been &#8220;largely ineffective&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The industry was <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-07\/salmon-florfenicol-antibiotics-approved-tasmania\/105983426\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105983426\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">granted approval in November<\/a> to use a different antibiotic, florfenicol, in south-eastern waters, and has since applied it in pens in the D&#8217;Entrecasteaux Channel and off the north-west coast of Bruny Island.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-07\/salmon-florfenicol-antibiotics-approved-tasmania\/105983426\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antibiotic approved for Tasmania\u2019s salmon industry<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The industry&#8217;s use of the drug is in response to an &#8220;endemic&#8221; bacterial disease that caused the deaths of up to 15,000 tonnes of salmon from January to April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Real-time updates&#8221; showing when and where florfenicol is used are listed on the salmon companies&#8217;
