Ewell Townview Center in Oak Cliff, dozens of students poured out of the school\u2019s doors and crowded the front steps at 10:50 a.m. They held signs, and American and Mexican flags, as they chanted \u201cICE out of Dallas\u201d during their lunch period. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Rolando Valenzuela, a junior, said he came to the protest to support other families like his own. His parents came to the United States as immigrants and have gained legal status since then.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Valenzuela said he doesn\u2019t think most people understand the hardships that many immigrants face. It also comes amid state officials\u2019 calls for discipline against students, educators and schools in districts where walkouts have occurred. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has spurred much of the scrutiny, including<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gregabbott_tx\/status\/2018725851135648107?s=46&amp;t=CaFxo8KhdwumIpqddL5PmA\" rel=\"nofollow\"> calling for students to be arrested<\/a> and for staffers who facilitate walkouts to be disciplined. He also asked the Texas Education Agency to launch an investigation into a student-led walkout in Austin ISD, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GregAbbott_TX\/status\/2017402274054648179?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2017402274054648179%7Ctwgr%5E91542458f4af205614593d15a12dd058a0edbae6%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fox7austin.com%2Fnews%2Fabbott-directs-education-commissioner-investigate-austin-isd-student-ice-protests\" rel=\"nofollow\">describing it as \u201cpolitical indoctrination.\u201d <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/tea.texas.gov\/about-tea\/news-and-multimedia\/news-releases\/news-2026\/tea-releases-guidance-for-school-systems-outlining-consequences-regarding-student-walkouts-absences-and-educator-and-district-responsibilities?fbclid=IwY2xjawP3RjlleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFvRzNVTmp1TGpJRmd0b2o4c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHri6pwyUnByrju2GsAtmJp9JBxmLAgBJYjdVPthQpD-LgD1KFosOHXIYzu1P_aem_SsUtqZpqEmREchZbQiD-Iw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TEA recently warned school leaders<\/a> that districts that facilitate walkouts could come under investigation, potentially resulting in a state takeover. Teachers who encourage students to walk out could have teaching certificates revoked and districts where students walk out will lose daily attendance funding. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">While state leaders called for a crackdown on walkouts, student organizers at Townview spent days talking to classmates and building support to ensure turnout, said sophomore Friuli Valles. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIf the smartest kids in Dallas want to walk out, I think that should be a sign that there is something wrong,\u201d she said. U.S. News and World Report <a href=\"https:\/\/thehub.dallasisd.org\/2025\/08\/26\/four-dallas-isd-high-schools-earn-top-10-ranking-in-texas-2\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/thehub.dallasisd.org\/2025\/08\/26\/four-dallas-isd-high-schools-earn-top-10-ranking-in-texas-2\/\">ranked Townview as Texas\u2019 top rated campus last year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">On Monday, a group of 39 Texas House Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=1297395865546064&amp;set=pcb.1297395892212728\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sent a letter to state Education Commissioner Mike Morath<\/a> asking for clarification on the TEA\u2019s guidance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Among other questions, the lawmakers asked Morath to explain how the agency defines \u201cencouragement\u201d and \u201cfacilitation\u201d by a teacher or district, and whether a district that coordinates with walkout organizers to keep participants safe would fall into those categories. He accused district officials of \u201ctrying to impose their radical political agenda on the next generation\u201d by allowing students to walk out. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">On Monday, Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde sent parents an email advising them of TEA\u2019s updated guidance on walkouts and the potential consequences for students, teachers and districts. School staff can\u2019t force students to stay on campus, officials said, but they noted that students who skip class will be given unexcused absences and could incur further discipline, per the district\u2019s student handbook. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The student walkouts across Texas have been overwhelmingly peaceful. But a Kyle man was arrested last week following a fight with student protesters from Hays Consolidated ISD. The fight was captured on video. Chad Michael Watts, 45, faces two counts of assault causing bodily injury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The Trump administration\u2019s immigration enforcement efforts have shaken communities across North Texas over the past year as federal officials follow through on a campaign promise of mass deportation of undocumented immigrants. Photos of ICE agents near two Bachman Lake neighborhood schools prompted concerns that the federal agency was targeting Dallas schools for enforcement. An FAQ on the website advises that, should a parent be detained during school hours, Dallas ISD staff will keep students safe until an \u201cauthorized adult\u201d can pick them up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cChildren have a constitutional right to have equal access to education regardless of their immigration status or their parents\u2019 status,\u201d it reads. \u201cThat right cannot be taken away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Tuesday\u2019s demonstrations aren\u2019t the first walkouts in Dallas ISD in recent years. In 2023, hundreds of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/education\/2023\/04\/05\/books-not-bullets-hundreds-of-dallas-teens-walk-out-to-protest-against-gun-violence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Townview students walked out to protest gun violence<\/a>.
