Some of it good. Some of it bad. Some of it downright ugly. When faced with intriguing developments in the week&#8217;s news, we turn to a rotating panel of &#8220;non-experts&#8221; to parse <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/topics\/good-bad-ugly\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly<\/a> of it all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This week, our panel weighs in on these stories:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Last Friday, Elon Musk announced Grok had been updated after Musk complained that it and other AI chatbots like it were &#8220;too woke.&#8221; Well, Musk and his programmers may have overshot the mark a bit. By Tuesday, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/09\/nx-s1-5462609\/grok-elon-musk-antisemitic-racist-content\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Grok was praising Adolf Hitler, calling itself &#8220;MechaHitler,<\/a>&#8221; and publishing a number of antisemitic posts captured in screenshots but since apparently deleted.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>After yearsof fumbling with shoe laces, enduring strangers&#8217; smelly feet, and watching security lines move slower than molasses in January, at a news conference Tuesday, Homeland Security Director Kristi Noem <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/07\/08\/nx-s1-5460978\/tsa-shoes-stay-on-airport-security-screening__;!!LkSTlj0I!EJpPpwyDMuTiIxZlnvuf2JdHfAU9cEgGSKSCVy_u5o59vZK92AZ-tgJE3KkYNOnBcY7Ah1o7--J_Qg$\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">announced the policy<\/a> requiring most passengers to remove their shoes at TSA checkpoints was no longer in effect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Our panel of non-experts this week includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.androvett.com\/people\/mary-flood\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mary Flood<\/a>, legal consultant with Androvett Legal Media &amp; Marketing<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bakerinstitute.org\/experts\/vivian-ho\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Vivian Ho<\/a>, health economist at Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uhd.edu\/faculty\/branhamd.aspx\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">David Branham<\/a>, professor of political science at the University of Houston-Downtown<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A lot can happen in a week.
